HE mailbox |><| Trudeau’s mind closed to nuclear realities Dear Editor: Prime Minister Trudeau's fuzzy open letter on the cruise missile clearly shows a closed mind on the nuclear realities of today. Some examples: 1.In 1976 a group of ultra- conservatives in the U.S. formed the Committee on the Present Danger. Its avowed purpose was to see to it that the U.S. would widen its nuclear lead over the Soviet Union to the point where the U.S. could fight and win a nuclear war between the two. super powers. When Reagan took office as president of the U.S. in 1980 he selected 32 members of this committee as members of his govern- ment. One of them is Paul Nitze, the U.S. chief nuclear arms negotiator. For Trudeau to expect a de- escalation of the arms race as a result of negotiations by Nitze is like expecting an end to human rights violations by appointing Idi Amin as head of Amnesty International: 2.Trudeau’s remarks about the U.S. protecting the West with its nuclear umbrella is an example of applying Victorian ideas to the nuclear realities of the Space Age. To speak of defence in a world where nuclear weapons have a col- lective explosive force equal to three tons of TNT for every man, woman and child in the world is to indulge in the most dangerous of fan- tasies. Instead Trudeau should heed the repeated warnings of the International Physicians for the Preven- tion of Nuclear War, Scien- tists for Peace and Generals for Peace and Disarmament that nuclear war is neither winnable nor survivable; 3.1f we are living in a ge- nuine democracy, Canada’s position on the testing of the cruise missile would be bas- ed on the wishes of Cana- dians, most of whom oppose such testing. As it is, that policy-is based on the wishes of those in the U.S. State Department and the Pen- tagon. It is important for Prime Minister Trudeau and his supporters to understand that the repatriation of Canada's constitution from London last year by itself does not make Canada a tru- ly sovereign nation. Full sovereignty will only be achieved when Canada repatriates its foreign policy from Washington and develops an _ independent economic policy. 4.Canada’s annual military expenditures are about five times what the entire world spends on the United Na- tions’ annual budget. Yet it should be clear to all think- ing persons that Canada’s fueling of the arms race will not make one iota of dif- ference in the final outcome of a nuclear war. However, Canada CAN make a major difference by pulling out of the arms race and becoming a world leader in peace and disarmament initiatives. The’ final reality is that while nuclear war by acci- dent is very possible, world peace by accident is not. To achieve world peace is a long and arduous journey of developing trust and cooperation. As the Chinese have so aptly put it “even the longest journey starts with the first step.” No nation in the world is in a _ better political and geographic position than Canada to take that first major step towards peace by pulling out of the arms race - a race that no one can win, but everybody can lose.
