SECTION ENTERTAINMENT "AUTO «TV Tel. 985-2131 Mudry earns cycling silvers, off to L.A. final THE ONLY North Shore cyclist competing in last weekend’s 7-Eleven meet in Calgary earned two silvers and a ticket to Los Angeles for the championship meet. Brent Mudry of West Vancouver finished second in two of the three events he entered in the four category meet. The national squad member's formance practically cemented his chances of attending the LA meet as a member of the squad, funding permitting. Had Mudry won even one gold. he would have automatically gone on to the meet slated for the beginning of July in the new Olympic velodrome. The Calgary meet was held on a 400m banked track and was part of an Olympic cycling per- By NANCY CAMPBELL development series of meets sponsored by 7-Eleven. Mudry’s best performance was in the individual pursuit event, a 4000m race which is his specialty. He had the § fastest qualifying time of 5:11.8 with Gary Altwasser of Calgary a slow second with 5:15.9. Unfortunately for Mudry, Altwasser managed to switch positions on him in the final, finishing in 5:12.4 for the gold against Mudry’s 5:14.2. The points race, a 5O lap, 200 km event which features sprints every five laps for Points, allowed Mudry to pick up his second silver. The race was a_ real cliffhanger, with the stan- dings depending entirely on the final sprint, but a slow finish in that sprint cost Mudry the gold which went to Neal Davies of Burnaby. Davies finished with 27 points, Mudry with 24. The West Vancouver man also finished sixth in the sprints, a 1000m race which has the last 200m timed. The fourth event was a straight 1000m race against the clock. Mudry will be one of several North Shore cyclists competing tn the Canadian national championships slated for late July. Seven N.
