A8 - Sunday, April 4, 1982 - North Shore News He mailbox Dear Editor: In the March 14 issue of the Sunday News, MLA Jack Davis wrote in length about how foreign students are obtaining the same _ sub- sidization as domestic students therefore leaving less money available’ to finance the education of our own youth. As a result, so he says, domestic students are being displaced by these foreign students. This argument displays the sad tendency of politicians to use scapegoats to divert attention from the real issues. It may be true that the small number of foreign - students obtain subsidized education, but this is by no means a significant cause for the lack of accessibility to post secondary education. The cause is instead, the ongoing cutbacks _ that Bennett has been imposing over the last seven years. In the beginning few people complained about the cutbacks because the system was so _ responsive back in 1975 that students could cope with a little restraint. However, the cutbacks steadily worsened Foreign students being used as scapegoats to the point that now, even if a student living in residence qualified for the maximum student lgan (which ts rare) she/he would sull need at least $2,000.00 to manage a bare bones budget. In a job tight market this could be impossible. Some people have defended cutbacks by stating that because we already subsidize most of a student's education, they have no reason to complain. This attitude ignores the fact that if a student cannot afford the amount they are required to Stand up for ‘Variety’ kids! OPEN LETTER TO MLA JACK DAVIS Congratulations. The Social Credit Government of which you are a member has set a new record. You have established a new low for any government in Canada. I refer of course to the reduction of operating funds for Variety’s Treatment Centre for Children in Surrey. In order to appease the sacred funny money god of a balanced budget and thereby attempt to ensure re-election, your party has condemned many children to a life of pain and hardship isntead of the bright hope of ultimate recovery and useful lives that is their right as children and British Columbia. You, Mr. Davis, have attempted to establish yourself as a maverick within the Socred caucus and to therefore disassociate yourself from some of their actions. NOW is the time to stand up and be counted. This is a Socred action. You are a Socred. In 1975 whilst running. as the Socred candidate for Seymour, you stated at an all candidates mecting that although you were running as a Socred, you retained a Liberal philosophy Here ts citizens of | your chance to prove it. Prove that you are not just a political pragmatist who has sold his soul for a provincial seat. Prove it not just by writing “Letters to the Editor. Prove it by publicly condemning this govern- ment for this action and when a vote is next taken in the legislature. Stand up as a man with backbone and vote against these miserable misers. So what is the solution? The best idea I have heard so far is for the government to provide all the money needed for education up front, but impose a surtax on students’ income after they leave school. This way students will pay for their education eventually, but only when they can afford it. This idea has been ad- vocated by UBC economist John Kesselman for some time. If Jack Davis is really sincere about improving accessibility of education, he should be writing about the real issues instead of stirring up contempt against foreign students. 50 COPIES ¢ 4 oOo For Only “Vax FOR SPEED AND ECONOMY BRING YOUR INSTANT PRINTING TO ee” william meek printing Itd.
