A8-Sunday News, June 22, 1980 ret a Rn Rael RRR ER me oe mailbox — Tree vandals victims have selves to blame Dear Editor: A recent issue of your paper carried a front page photograph of a West Vancouver resident posing with some trees in his yard, allegedly cut down by some of his neighbors while he was away. ; The incident and the publicity that has been attached to it with your story illustrate the type of problem that many North Shore residents face. Because of the topography of the North Shore, a large percentage of the residents, particularly those in the British Properties in West Van- couver, have had or have the potential for beautiful views looking out over the City. For years, the custom in the British Properties at least has been for residents whose trees grow up to block the neighbours’ views to agree to have their trees trimmed back periodically at the Tequest and at the expense of those neighbours who want to have the work done. By and large this custom works well, however there are Many situations where residents refuse point blank to either keep their trees to a level that does not block their neighbours’ view, or to allow the neighbours to have the trees cut back at the neighbours’ expense. In many situations, these same people who feel quite free to block. the views of others have very. nice themselves. views Keep bridge-highway link out of North Van Dear Editor: As a lifetime resident of the Distnct of North Van- couver, I have recently become aware of the proposed route of a bndge linking Lions Gate Bndge with the Upper Levels Highway, to be directed along the residential area on the cast bank of the Capuano River I feel strongly that che planners could find a much better alternate route through West Vancouver. We already have a major artery through residential North Vancouver, the same as Taylor Way, going up Capilano Road. that provides a feeder road giving heavy vehicles access to the Highway West. Sixty residents of | the District, including myself, have submitted a peGton to Mayor Bell and Council, strongly objecting to the proposed plan, and ask that Thanks Peter for ‘fun Dear Peter Speck Just a note of appreciation from the crew of “Sparton” for a well run and cnyoyable “Fuso most Race” of PLATING, outside AKOUND Here Cart and i canac roundabout there June 1S The after festivities were also greatly appreciated and our first to finish plaque wall be displayed with pride on all residents who have en- yoyed the beauty of Capuano River to seriously consider the negative ramifications of the proposal as recently described in your newspaper Would you kindly assist us in. our efforts by asking anyone interested in signing a further petition to please contact me at 980-7626 Linda Stonehouse North Vancouver race’ our office wall We look joining In again next year’ ALL ¢ North Vancouver forward = to Ron Defieun Recreathon Cente tf ts certainty cooa tor (Perry Peter photo! youre amall cooagh tor three belt ta rtghe: and around and around ts a good way to spend an alternoon the Nonth Vancouver the Nadine Shells In addition to the aesthetic aspect of the matter, a view or lack thereof can make a great deal of difference to the value of a home, when one wishes to sell. A view can easily add $20,000 or $30,000 to the value of a home in the $200,000 price range, and many of the homes in West Vancouver, because of inflation, are in that range. It is not, therefore, very hard to understand why some people take matters into their own hands and go out and whack down trees that are in their way. When this happens, instead of the trees simply being topped and trimmed professionally. they are usually destroyed. Either the “midnight logger” cuts them off at the butt, or more subtle means might be employed such as sawing the tree part way through or chopping a large circle around it with a hatchet so that it eventually dies and Stores should help with child-sitting Dear Editor: I think it) would be a magnanimous, humanitanan gesture on the part of the large department Stores to provide rest-cum-recreation facilites to take care of tiny children (patterned, perhaps on those provided by churches dumng_ services). while thew = mothers shopping in) the = store Following their mothers about on shopping tours 1s excessively liring tedious for tiny children It is) additionally most distressing for rank and file shoppers to tiny children, than lurcsome are and witness more sobbing = from boredom = and or sheer cxhaustion. especially at nap bedtime these often nol hours Something perhaps paralleling parking routine free Custodial service for a stipulated period after which «a nominal charge could be levied Such modus burvw do thie Jr yee Jrercgnras, fieors cof Wee mnoyt etd te t oe kee he restrict f fie Ji tue of au { bupyee thies operand: would, tn all probability, rebound to the benefit of department stores in the long run by way of increased sales (Mrs )Ohve Wyatt Vancouver Neer Asso tation immediately ‘ott “yet . ‘woypott \ Box 357 c/oNSWN Ploase apply to FULL TIME— PART TIME Ladies’ Fashions West Van ‘Jur select fashion Conscious Candidate Must have an excephonal aptitude and yeosire tu exc ell in Cc ustOme}r Service We will provide compiete traming for The nght iadivicduals interested in a long We have two positions to fill JA YO TIES weekly Spot 1139 Lonsdale Ave N Van has to be removed.
