telephones and stealing
money from them was worth
five months in jail for a 5]-
year-old man.

Jean Guy Laurendeau, of
no fixed address, pleaded
guilty in Vancouver
provincial court to charges
of possessing tools for
breaking into coin-operated

devices and of theft under
$200.

Laurendeau was arrested
after the B.C. Tel secunty
department began in-
vVestipating a ooseries of
complaints that several
telephones in the downtown
area aren't returning the

deposited coms on in-
completed calls.

_ Investigators — tollowed
Laurendeau, who had

received a four-month ail
term last December for the
same offences, and saw him
tampering with and taking
money from the telephones.

And in New Westminster
provincial court recently,
27-year-old Bruce Bettenson
of Montreal was fined a total
of $300 after pleading guilty
to two charges of theft of
telecommunication services.

Bettenson had placed two
long distance calls from a
phone in New Westminster
to his wife in Montreal and
had billed them to a third
number in Montreal.

In addition to the $300
fine, Bettenson was ordered
lo pay restitution of $20 to
BC. Tel for the long
