Page 20, May 20, 1979 - Sunday News . - orm ee -Botnen takes womens ‘ gymnastics title _ British Columbia gymnasts won two oyerall titles at the ‘Western Canadian Cham- pionships in Edmonton and came home with eight in- ‘dividual apparatus gold _ medals and two team awards. Alberta took most of the team awards capturing 15 gold medals. All North Shore gymnasts won awards. Topping the list was Anita Botnen of Flicka’ Gym Club who won the women’s Open title with a score of 33.25. Botnen won the uneven bars gold medal with.a high 8.95 score .and the beam gold ‘with scores of 31. with 8.1 to pull herself up to top place from ‘last year's seventh place finish. She.was . sliver medalist exercise with 8.55. in floor Flicka girls Susan Woyat and Valerie Smith finished in: fifth and sixth overall places and 31.35, respectively. Smith won a silver medal on uneven bars with 8.75 while Woyat won a bronze on vault with 8.45 and came fifth on floor exercise with 8.15. B.C. won the team Open award with a total of 154.55 points, followed by Saskatchewan with 153.75. titles The men’s Open title went to Allan Reddon of Alberta. Both of the Novice overall went to Alberta’s Shelly Leacock with 33.30 and Sam Friedman with 46.55. Flicka gymnasts followed in_ second, third and fourth places. ' Silver medalist was Barbi Branda who finished with a score of 32.30. Branda won the beam event with 8.45, came third on uneven bars with 8.20 and ofthe on floor exercise with Bronze: medalist Elaine Prescott finished with 31.65, winning a gold medal Gn “uneven bars 8.40, a silver on floor exercise 8.35... and coming 6th beam with 7.20. Catherine Bates finished fourth overall with a score of 30.90. She finished second on vault, 8:05, third on beam, 8.35 and sixth on bars with 6.90. Susan Chow came fourth on beam. with 7.60 and finished in 10th overall place with 28.35, Ron Gosney of West Vancouver came lith overall in the Novice division . with a score of- 41.55. He finished fourth on parallel bars with 7.05 and 6th in rings with 7.10.
