TRAVEL show for su Palm Springs no longer a deserted ghost town in hottest months of the year PALM SPRINGS — The most striking aspect of the desert is not the heat but the light. Early in the morning, wien the first golfers are stirring, the sky has a brilliance, clear yet soft, that brings renewed vitality to rain-sodden visitors. Good weather is hard to avoid here, what with 350 days of sun- shine a year. . It gets hot in the summer — it used to be that when spring came the airport died and, in town, the main street looked like a set out of High Noon. But no more. Palm Springs lowered its prices and banged the drum., There’s now a thriving summer traffic, with lots of business from Asia and Europe. The Japanese come for the 85 golf courses, and the Germans and Scandinavians apparently can’t get enough raw heat. ‘What everybody likes is the variety of hotels, from the lux- urious villas of La Mancha to budget motels. There ave 15,500 hotel rooms in the valley, including four nudist hotels and three where clothing is optional; at the latter, I am advis- ed, guests dress for breakfast. At the Westin Mission Hillis Resort in Ranch Mirage, summer rates include packages such as a “Not for golfers only”’ special. For a rate of $179 on the weekend or $139 mid-week, packages in- clude unlimited golf for two, or the option of unlimited tennis or a massage. The zesort has three pools, a _ 60-foot waterslide, four * whirlpools, and a new 20-acre ‘park with a one-mile paved track for joggers, cyclists and rollerbladers. There is a children’s area with a fishing pond, a basketball court and soccer fields. The package, priced in U.S. ‘dollars, is available untii September 11. _}Like the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver (where John Travolta was in Trader Vic’s recently), ’ there are usually celebrities around and things happening. . - One night the Desert Symphony came to play outdoors. It was for a special event, but anyone could look over and see the show, with Max Geldray play- ing the harmonica. Now there’s a name; Geldray was in the BBC Radio series The ; Goon Show for its entire run, 1950-60. ’ He is a legend, a 77-year-old. We sipped margaritas on a Western set with the talented peo- ple from Desert Adventures, who run the best outings in the valley, then sat down to a candle-lit din- ner in the quiet of the Andreas Canyon. Suddenly there was a stab of light and a tall man in a hand- some suit made his way to a small stage and said, “My name is Riff Markowitz, I’m Jewish and this is as Western as I get.”” The golf courses will be open for play and at reduced rates. Green fees at the Westin’s Pete Dye course and new Gary Player layout come down from the usual $100 to $50 in July and August and $55 in June and September. Both courses have been highly praised. You might also want to check out the golf schools, one at Indian Wells Golf Resort and two at Marriott hotels.
