North Vancouver City is challenging all entrants to ‘Put up or clam up’’ for this year’s cook- off to create the best chowder this side of Boston. So far the entries to this fourth annual fun contest are not living up to expectations, and only a few groups have entered to cook up a clam chowder storm. “T thought all.these gourmet cooks were going to come through,” said parks events coor- dinator Rete McKay, noting the lagging entries. ‘‘1’d like to see 20 entrants again this year.”’ Divided into two categories — professional food services and the general public — the contest tests participants’ culinary acumen with tough-to-make cream-style chowder. Out of last year’s 20 entries, the clowning Clam Bellies, cooked up a storm to win the non-profes- sional category; the team from the Cheshire Cheese Inn at Lonsdale Quay won the professional title. Well-known judges from the food services industry will sample the fare and then award ap- propriate prizes to the winning cu- linary connoisseurs. Contestants are invited to create a theme and dress the part — prizes will be awarded for the best theme and decor during chowder preparation.
