72 — Friday, August 5. 1999 - North Shore News - Creating BRITISH Columbians could generate their own clean power and sell any excess back to BC Hydro, according to a David Suzuki Foundation report released recently. “Net metering is an Ng new way for con- sumers to help the enviconment, and support new clan energy industries,” said Jim Fulton, the foun- dation’s executive director. Net metering Means power consumers can con: nect their own micro-hydro, wind curbines, an panels to the elccirical grid. If more power is gener- ated than the home or business can consume, the excess feeds into the grid, and the customer’s meter runs backwards. In some cases, depending on the technology used, utility customers may save moncy overall or even turn a profit. In this scenario clean, renewable energy sources ~- solar, wind and micro-hydro — could reduce the demand for environmentally damaging ones such as -fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), nuclear, and large-scale hydro. Burning less fossil fuels also means we reduce sreenhouse gas emissions, the cause of global warm- ing and climate change. This is 3 growing problem in the BC Hydro system as natural gas-fired power becomes a larger portion of Hydro’s supply. In fact, BC Hydro’s greenhouse gas emissions are projected to increase by ten times over 1990 levels by 2004. “Net metering is a great local, small-scale solu- tion to a global probiem,” said Fulton, “If we can cut air pollution, reduce the risk of climate change, and lessen the environmental impacts of electrical power gencration, let’s scize this opportunity.” Titled Clean Power at Home, the in-depth report showed how renewable energy can offer eco- nomic and environmental benefits to clectric unity companies, shareholders and customers. “Net metering would also help create jobs and stimulate growth in the renewable energy field, and enhance the market for these clean energy sources,” said report author Andrew Pape. “It’s easy to see the benefits of nct metering, but whenever we raised them with utilities and reg- ulators, we kept hearing about their concerns,” said Dermot Foley, former executive director of the Association for the Advancenient of Sustainable Energy Policy, one of the organizations that com- missioned the report. “This report answers all their concerns,” said Foley, “Now there's no doubt that net metering, is mer Forest and Stream Camps. | Bob Kessel F Ressel Realty Led. : 240-2800 §86-1469 ee \.) * OPEN SUN 12:30-2:30 & “THE SOLANO” TERRIFIC CITY VIEWS This 2 bedroom and den/solarium in the 2 year § f young Solano has a cozy gas fireplace insuita taun- dry great master bedroom with walk-in closet, & R impressive white kitchen, tiled kitchen, entrance & & bathroom.
