Doubling for Keanu in Matrix sequels From Page 13 29-year-old, who describes himself as “the crazy guy who always - tries to do flips.” Brushing off the day-to-day injuries that go with the territory, - (“Being a stuntman you know when you leave in the morning that you’ re going to get beat up or killed,”) he said a near-disaster with the “ratchet” was his scariest moment. A mutant with a super- powerful toad-like tongue had nothing over. disgruntled locals who didn’t like the set taking over their territory on a rural road. Several picketed the area, and one of them tried to sabotage the ratchet — a machine that uses compressed air to propel the stunt- man through the air. A member of the crew noticed a cotter pin was missing. “After we did the stunt and they came back and told us what was going on,” he recalled, “then you start counting your bless- ings.” gs. While McMichael has done lots of local work, including for the TV series The Immortal, a pilot for 2 show called Freedom and the feature film Saving Silverman, this is by far his biggest job. Wolverine, one of the “good” mutants with instant healing abili- ties and indestructible adamantium claws, is the central character in the film based on the wildly popular comic books. While McMichael does all of the stunt work for Wolverine, he also has a brief moment as Mystique, the villainous mutant who can morph into anyone else. The character is played by super- model Rebecca Romjin-Stamos, whose entirel blue-painted and prosthetics-enhanced body makes the most of her assets. During the filming of a kick, McMichaels was asked to wear a . skin-tight outfit with curves in all the right places. His body would be covered later with an image of hers through computer graph- ics. i - ; ~ “] did what I had to do and I got out of it as fast as J could,” he recalled witha shudder . McMichael, who used to work as a computer technician, came to show business with a background in martial arts. Between 1987 and 1990 he was ranked third in a world-class division in Chinese Wushu. One day about four years ago, he was practising at a gym in Burnaby and he saw some stuntmen trying out combat moves. He went over and made some suggestions, one of them gave him a business card, and he’s been working ever since. In the fall, McMichael will be doubling for Keanu Reeves in, “the Matrix Zand HI, both which will be shot in Australia. While he hopes that neither of his young sons choose to become stuntmen (the average career is seven years, because of all - the injuries) he sees himself doing it at least that long. An added benefit is that he gets long stretches at home with his family. “Very few people find what their dream job is,” he said. “So I . feel pretty lucky.” | E ricue gift ideas for your £in~town visitors or out-of-town visit. share their unique original art with your friends & relatives.
