OPTIONS THE following is a selection of volunteer opportunities available through North Shore Community Services (NSCS): Campaign canvassers are needed for the annual cam- paign drive throughout the province in’ the month of March. Canvassers are needed to cover all the North Shore in a door-to-door campaign. A host volunteer is needed to show newcomers to Canada Divorce study helps children DIVORCE is tough on couples, but when it happens to families children go through their own break-up pains. Initial results of a study being conducted in Simon Fraser University’s clinical psychology centre — shows group therapy for children can help them get through the trauma. The Kids in Divorce and Separation study is designed to help children between the ages of eight and $2 years of age. The study helps children cope with the stresses of par- ent separation and divorce, in cases where parents have decided to separate within the past year. Parents of about 40° chil- dren who participated in the first group sessions in the fall found their children were less angry, more open about their feelings and their school work had improved. Children found: the ses- sions helped them see they weren't alone, that the break- ups weren't their fault, and thar they should talk about their feelings. A second phase of the study begins in’ February. Participants are currently being sought. Athird phase will follow in the summer. A well-established treat- ment program is uscd by graduate students in’ clinical psychology during — cight weekly group sessions held at the clinical psychology centre. The treatment, free of charge, ix supervised by Dr. Patricia Kerig, an SFU psy- chology associate professor and regis d- psychologist who speciahzes in child clini- cal psychology.
