The show continues through Nov. 30. eo 68 Ir’s a banner year for West Van painter Gordon Smith, who is currently enjoying a 50-year retrospective of his work at the Vancouver Art Gallery. On Oct. 24, the 78-year-old artist was recognized for his commitment and dedi- cation to North Vancouver School raise funds for its programs. As a founding patron to the trust, Smith has been instrumental to its success in bringing many of Canada’s leading contemporary artists on board, says man- aging director Bili MacDonald. The trust’s extensive permanent col- lection of Canadian art has been renamed the Gordon Smith Teaching Collection of Canadian Art. lamps, mahogany treasure chests and magic carpets — and family heirlooms like his grandfather’ 's pocket watch, a Requent mofif in his etchings watercolors of birds and painstakingly exquisitely animals, all detailed and framed. Life is full of surprises. He paints birds that behave like humans, iguanas that carry pocket watches. “My animals always like to make fun of time and really it’s of no value,” says the artist, who is always on time. The destruction that mired his island home is not reflect- ed in his work. He paints only the etchings at the rate of six to an hour. Each is painstak- ingly colored by hand. His frames match the intricacy of his work. Hand-gilded in 22- karat gold and ourchased at auction, they cas casily cost as much as the sw: they encase. Life is heing tre te yourself. “All my life, evecvycne was try- ing to change. what I was doing,” he says. “You can’t paint birds with clothes on,” his detractors would say. After completing a graphic arts program at Capilano College he tasted three weeks in the profes- sion. So he returned to his fine art. “When you retire from work or you ask people on their deathbed ‘what is it you would have liked to have done more,’ no one ever says that they wished they had worked more or that they were on time.” Life is art. gentle scenes. “I like to paint things in a gold- ¢ moment,” he says. His pleasure is “to take something soft and gentle and put it out into this cruel world.” Life is a test of will.
