News from the Norte
front: As all Norte fans surely
know by now, Philip
Mitchell’s emergency plan to
pull his excellent Mexican
restaurant out of the bank-
tuptcy fire was not success-
ful. Bre there is a silver lining
to this dlack culinary cloud.

The new owner of the
Norte site is a good old
North Shore boy from way
back: maitre d’ extraordinaire
Michael Kilby.

Yes, that’s right diners,
the former general manager
of Bimini on West Fourth
Avenue in Vancouver, the
owner of the famed Basil’s
(now Star Anise) on West .
12th Avenue in Vancouver
and the leading managerial
light behind Afslvancy’s on
Granville Island back when
the island was more industri-
al than commercial. Kilby
also helped establish the
original Savoury in Deep
Cove and directed fledgling
