Well over a thousand peo- ple did last Saturday. I know because I was one of them. In fact, over 1,300 tickets were sold for last Sarurday’s rave, somewhere in Burnaby. When I read the ticker T had just bought, it read “ADMIT ONE,” and that was about all it said. It had a phone number on the back for more information, which. ! was supposed to call after six o'clock thar evening. The recorded voice on the machine told me the place to be and the time to be there. Once my friends and I got to the location, a school bus came by and picked us up. This bus ran back and forth, driving people from the loca- tion, to the rave, from 10 in the evening to one in the morning. No cars were allowed, so once you were there you were trapped, and the buses didn’t start to take people back until 6 in the morning. Fortunately, no one want- ed to leave until about six in the morning. The rave took place in a big studio or warchouse, it was hard to tell. There were six huge screens that played computer graphics, ions of black neon lights, and lasers everywhere. Water (among other things) was being sold in the next room. There was also a smaller, cooler room with some couches, where you could a will light up the night on Friday. Ten hours of non-stop danc- ing sounds a bit harsh, but somehow people managed to do it. Some people might be concerned that fights might break our, however, raves are much safer than you’d think. Evervone’s usually too stoned to get into fights. The most popular drug seemed to be MDMA, berter known as Ecstasy. This drug is approved in the States by the F.D.A. for medical pur- poses, however here in Canada, Ecstasy still remains illegal. Ecstasy is both a stimulan: and a psychedelic drug. It was once used in psychother- apy, until it was banned. It is stil often used illegally for romantic purposes, or in this case, raves. Ecstasy has a mild hallu- cinogenic effect on visual per- ception. This would magnify the intensity of the lasers, and distort the images on the screens. This drug is also sup- posed to make people feel close to one another (nor necessarily sexually). Ecstasy stimulates the cells that use ceratonin; it acti. ates the pleasure centre of the brain. Some dangers of this drug include damage to nerve cells in the brain, short term’ depression, and addiction. It’s also suppose to affect the jiver, heart, and lungs. This rave was pretty packed. When I asked Derck - Junck, who’s been to about seven raves, how many peo- ple were usually at raves, he said somewhere between 500 to 3,000 peuple. Summer Love (a rave held last August) had somewhere around 4,500 people. When I asked him if he thought niost raves were sim- itar, Derek replied “You never know what to expect. The music at this one (last Saturday) kept stopping. At most raves it’s seamless and non-stop throughout the - night.” He went on to say that raves start 2s early as 10 in the evening and usually end at around 8 in the morning. Eight o’clock in the morning was about the time’ we left. Coming out of the building with about 300 other people to meet broad, .;'” daylight was one of the strangest experiences that I’ve"... ever faced. Everyone seemed | so burnt out and shocked that it was light our. Some people were still jumpy, while others were just about sleeping on their feet. My guess is that about a ‘thousand people went home™ ‘ on Sunday morning and slept. }know Idid. _ - Ashley Vincent is a Grade. 12 Sutherland Secondary stu-" ; dent enrolled in Video i" Production 12 at Leo Marshall Curriculum Centre.
