Dear Editor: Congratulations on your Oct. 21 editorial regarding the track and field facility ar Mahon Park, It is a credit to the numerous communi- ty volunteers who, though not involved in the sport themselves, spent hundreds of hours in site visits and research to make an informed recommendation on the best possible site in North Vancouver, I understand that there are always neigh- borhood concerns about development. But the sport of track and field does nor draw large City track uj numbers of spectators. It is a) participatory sport, and one thar over 2,500 North Vancouver school children enjoy. Community track and field competitions are held between May and early July, usually one per month, School competitions are held mid- week during the dav. In other words, traffic concerns are largely unfounded. Traffic should be no greater than exists presently. There is already a six-lane, 440-yard track in place. A standard cight-lane 400-metre track takes more space, but not much. Only one tree will reed to be removed, and the water play park will remain where it is. Except during fosmal competitions, neigh: boring residents will be able to make frequent use of the smooth, soft track surface from morning ull night.
