Ten years later the North Shore Garden Contest has become an eagerly anticipated annual event and a source of community pride. Over the past decade, vol- unteer judges have evaluated nearly 1,000 gardens, both large and small, private and commercial. Many of the prize- winning, private gardens are opened to the public just one day a year, during the North Shore Garden Tour, held annu- ally in the spring. This year’s winning gardens, many of which will show up on next year’s garden tour, were announced during an evening, ceremony Oct. 2 at Delbrook Community Centre. Scooping up the Award of Excellence was Delphine Masterton for her property on Terrace Avenue in North Vancouve ny Masterton’s English garden, with a stream, pond and two small foot bridges, was a romantic setting for her Laburnum Cottage bed and breakfast. First prize for Small Residential Garden went to Diane Westerlund of Wellington Drive for her shade garden adjoining Princess Park. Second-prize honors were awarded to first-time entrants Heather Priest and = Joan Bortell for their property on Skyline Drive, “a most unusual and lovely garden,” according, to Harriott McNaughton, one of the contests six judges. Third place went to Sharron Cant of Woodburn Place in West Van for her container gar- den of 200 pots. Barbara Wells was honored with the Award of Culdural Excellence for her authentic Japanese garden on Eyremount Drive in West Van.
