ter to the federal liberals on the
subject of free speech.

affecting the rights of MPs to

Ted White, Reform party MP for
North Vancouver, reported in
October that Liberal House Leader
Peter Milliken was suggesting a
new secof rules might be adopted if
MPs abuse their freedom of speech,

As matters stand, MPs cannot be
prosecuted for wiat is said within
the confines of the House.

Crist told council that proposed
punishments might include the cut-
ting off of telephones and airplane
tickets.

“This is clearly inappropriate."
said Crist. ;

“Our MPs are our representa-

tives, whether we voted for them or
not, and they must be able to move
freely and they must be: able: to
communicate freely,” he said.

Only Mayor Marray Dykeman
opposed the motion, arguing that
the issue fell outside of council's
mandate.
