Fish hatchery funds in doubt THE SEYMOUR Salmonid Society is asking for the pub- lic’s help to save the communi- ty-operated fish hatchery in North Vancouver. By Colin Thomas and Richard Ostler Recently the hatchery was put on the “chopping block” as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) reduces costs. The decision would eliminate over $150,000 in funding and likely close the hatch- ery. Members of the Seymour Salmonid Society say their hatchery is on the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ “hit list” as part of Ottawa’s attack on the deficit. The DFO is preparing a short-list of facilities to cut funding to. Bill Ryan of the Seymour Salmonid Society says the DFO rat- ing process is ‘flawed and preju- diced.” “They are ignoring such factors as conservation, public involvement and education,” said Ryan. According to hatchery statistics, more than 10,000 people, half of whom are public school children, visit the Lillooet Road facility each year. DFO’s annual contract payment to the Seymour Socicty to manage and operate the hatchery is current- ly $153,800. in return, the hatchery releases about 500,000 fish a year. It pro- duces coho, chinook, chum, steel- head (summer and winter runs) salmon and cutthroat trout. The society is asking for those people who support the facility to write to the Minister of Fisheries. Letters can be addressed to: Brian Tobin, Minister of Fisheries, House of Commons, Room 515S Centre Block, Ottawa, Ont., KIA OA6.
