No wrecks at NOW THIS is bliss: 250 movies and not a car chase in sight. By Kate Zimmerman News Reporter Nudity? Yep. Sex? Lots. But these elements exist in context and in harmony with inte!ligent scripts, full-blown characterizations, seamless act- ing and concise editing. That's right: these films were made outside Hollywood. This year’s Vancouver International Film Festival fea- tures a mind-boggling array of movies and documentaries from around the world, representing a myriad of genres and cultures. Judging from a sampling taken over a luxurious weekend of zip- ping between downtown Vancouver's Ridge, Caprice and Pacific Cinematheque. theatres, the quality of festival entries is igh. arhe festival continues until Oct. 16, with individual tickets $7 for adults, $5 for seniors 65 and older and $5 for matinees. Local film-maker Mina Shum casts an informed and sympa- thetic eye on the subject of growing up Chinese-Canadian in Double Happiness, her remark- ably polished, often-comic debut feature. This story stars Sandra Oh as Jade, a young woman caught between her parents’ old- fashioned expectations and her own modern sensibility. This film will be screened again Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. at Pacific Cinema- theque. Domestic iife of a bleaker variety is examined in the Irish made-for-TV quartet Family, directed by Michael Winterbottom and written by Roddy Doyle (The Commit- ments, The Snappen. The rocky terrain of a lower-class existence pitted by peity crimes, abuse and violence has been mined before by Doyle and others. This time four members of the Spencer family receive individ- ual focus — boozing thief and father Charlo (Sean McGinley), film fest alcoholic, desperate mother Paula (Ger Ryan), self-destruc- tive 13-year-old John Paul and budding, apprehensive eldest daughter, Nicola. It shows again Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Hollywood. The film festival is amply sup- plied with documentaries.
