A NORTH Shore gym-
nastics club is offering the
facilities and coaching to
children with an Olympic-
size dream.

The Flicka gymnastics club was
founded in 1962 by Louise Hem-
mingway and her husband John.
Two years earlier, Louise repre-
sented Canada in gymnastics at
the 1960 Rome Olympic Games.

During that first year of opera-
tion, the club was home to two
gymnasts, Holly Bird and Tami
Martin. Both represented B.C. at
the National Championships.

How twenty years makes a dif-
ference.

Today there are over 450
dedicated young athletes par-
ticipating at the North Vancouver
club, coached and trained by a
certified staff well qualified to
give all the necessary training to
gymnasts of all levels.

The past two decades have seen
a number of Flicka athletes po on
to participate and win at both na-
tional and world levels.

Some highlights:

@ 1968 — Sandra Hartly,
daughter of Flicka coach Gladys
Hartly, wins the national senior
title, and Janet Parsons wins the

40 YEARS AGO

Work started on the new City
stadium on eight acres of land
north of Confederation Park. Fol-
lowing the receipt of $5,000 from
the North Vancouver Kinsmen
Club, Superintendent of Works
Jack Greenwood was instructed to
proceed with the clearing and
grading of the site. The stadium
was expected to be ready for use
in the 1954-55 season.

25 YEARS AGO

The first annual tweener bonspiel

national junior title.

@ 1976 — Karen Kelsall com-
petes for Canada at the Montreal
Olympics.

@ 1984 — Anita Botnen and
Bonnie Wittmeier represent
Canada at the Los Angeles sum-
mer games.

@ 1990 — Four Flicka gym-
nasts on Canadian ream at Medico
Cup in Austria. They win three
medals at competition.

@ 1991 — Six out of the seven
B.C. team members at the Canada
Winter Games are Flicka gym-
nasts.

@ 1991 — Flicka wins team
overall competition in Romania.
Angela Orange places first all-
atound, and Jenny Campbell
places third all-around.

Flicka operates several pro-
grams, including kindergarten
(aged three and up), recreational
and competitive classes, at all
levels.

The club is a non-profit
organization operating under the
direction of a volunteer board of
directors.

The club is open seven days a
week, and operates between nine
to 12 hours a day, teaching ap-
proximately 120 gymnasts daily
during the variously scheduled
hours.

Club was one of the most suc-
cessful junior bonspiels ever held
on the North Shore. Eighty-eight
teens from the Lower Mainland
competed in the inaugural event.
20 YEARS AGO

The Nor-Wester Caps outlasted
the Grandview Steelers 5-3 in
their West Coast Junior B hockey
home opener at the North Van-
couver recreation centre before
1,044 fans. Caps forward Pill
Lawson scored three goals.
