Group periorms at the ‘cultch’ VANCOUVER YOUTH Theatre is presenting a the- atrical double-bill, Are You Listening? and Will the Rea! Canadian ... ? at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre on March 12, 13 and 14, Are You Listening? is a hu- morous and poignant look at what would happen if teenagers, tired of not being listened to by their parents, teachers and society, came together and shared with each other the things which no one else has bothered to hear. In keeping with Vancouver Youth Theatre's philosophy, this play has been ‘*Playbuilt’” — ac- tors decide on a topic which reflects their interests and con- cerns, and then through discus- sion, improvisation and research, an original play is devised. The cast of 13 young actors (ranging in age from 12 to 16) began in September ‘9! with director Patti Allan and assistant director Heather Duff, to create Are You Listening?. “What is a Canadian?’’ The members of Vancouver Youth Theatre discussed this with the Grade 10 Social Studies class at Prince of Wales School and inter- viewed a number of other Cana- dians, to ascertain their views on the subject. Artist Jack Shadbolt, writers Paul Yee and Rick Shiomi, actress Margo Kane and members of the native Indian theatre company, Spirit Song were among those who shared their thoughts with the group. As well, Vancouver Youth Theatre considered the replies to 100 questionnaires, sent out by the group to discover the views of the Canadian public. Originally created in 1986, by Vancouver Youth Theatre, Will the Real Canadian ... ? takes a serious, yet lighthearted, look at many of the issues surrounding what is Canadian. The play has toured extensively in the Lower Mainland, and has played in Australia and Japan, where it won several awards, including best ac- tor, best director, and best play.
