Our common future... me NEWS photo Mike Waketield Recycled plastic lumber beginning to catch on A NEW plastics recycling plant is scheduled to start operating in Delta by July 15, but it remains to be seen whether the North Shore Recycling Program (NSRP) will expand its collection of Blue Box plastics. The NSRP, which now accepts only plastic milk jugs and pop bottles in the Blue Boxes, is con- stantly confronted with local resi- dents wondering why more plastics aren’t being recycled. To date, there have been several arguments against expanding the plastics collection program, the most notable being the lack of a market for mixed plastics. But with the opening of a local Eco Superwood plant, that may change. It is produced by shredding and grinding unsorted waste plastics of all varieties ~- supplied by manu- facturers’ surplus stocks or Blue Box programs -— and subjecting the material to intense pressure and moderate heat. The resulting substance is forc- ed into a mold, which is then submerged in a water bath. The cooled plastic is next ejected from the mold, and from that point on can be drilled, nailed and sawed like regular lumber. “Its a clean process,’’ says Cochran, noting that no harmful air or water emissions result from the Superwood production.
