MAILBOX Agree with Wright on condoms Dear Editor: f am writing to commend you for publishing the good column written by Noel Wright on Friday, Feb. 22. Mr. Wright has obviously taken the time to get the facts on the condoms-in-the-schools issue. As Mr. Wright points out, the only argument on the side of in- stalling condom machines in the schools is that ‘the kids do it anyway,’" so we must provide them with ‘‘safe sex’* in the form of condoms. Wright accurateiy calls the idea that kids wouldn't be tempted by the presence of the machines to try safe sex, *‘magic mushroom nontense.”’ He also accurately points out that in grade 9, 76 per cent of the students have not had full sexual activity, and even by grade II, 53 per cent have not been involved in intercourse. In fact, eliminating those who may have had one sexual experi- ence, a junior high school of 300 would have some 40 students who may be involved on a regular or occasional basis. The small number of students involved could rapidly be reduced by introduction of a good sexual abstinence program. These cur- ricula have a proven track record and only the condom salesmen and misinformed school officials, and some others, oppose such curricula. James A. Sctater Focus on the Family Vancouver District’s proposed play area is unsafe Dear Editor: We have learned of a proposed children’s play area for the Mos- quito Creek greenbelt near Evergreen and Glenview and are very concerned about the safety of this location. There have been two delegations to North Vancouver District Council on this matter, one sup- porting and one opposing it. As parents of small children in this area, already serviced by Fairmont Park just a few blocks {from Mosquito Creek, we feel money could be better spent upgrading the existing park before starting a new one. The location chosen for this tot play park is a secluded area sur- tounded by heavy woods and with no view from the street, making it susceptible to vandalism. It is ad- jacent to the spillway where Mos- quito Creek enters an under- ground flume that is not ade- quately fenced for very young children. The creek, with its steep banks, swiftly running water and substantial drop io the flume area below, is not an appropriate place to encourage young children to play. We hope that district council will take these safety considera- tions into account before allowing this proposai to go any further. T. Todd Parent’s group opposed to tot playground in Mosquito Creek Park Nortb Vancouver Answers to land claims question astounding Dear Editor: I was astonished at the results of Anna Marie D’Angelo’s poll in the March 13 Inquiring Reporter concerning appeal of the aboriginal land claims to the Supreme Court of Canada. Was this a true picture? Do the majority of British Columbians want to give away the province? Or was it fuzzy-headed piety that some people substitute for reason? LETTERS TO the editor smust include your name, written legibly: your full address and Perhaps the question should have been ‘‘would you be prepared to contribute another $2,000 to $3,000 in taxes each year to turn back the clock’’? I always believed apartheid was the power, usually self-proclaim- ed, for a minority to hold prefer- ential rights over the majority. In my opinion, vesting the ownership of all lands in the hands of a few is essentially apartheid. Why North Shore News Mailbox policy telephone number.
