THIS SEASON the most impor-
tant word in fashion is the West.

Popular styles are influenced by
the American plains — rugged
and durable. The colors this
season also come directly from the
west —- earth tones such as olive
green, rust and gold are prevalent.
And, the most popular footwear
continues to be western boots —
the standard of the west.

Outerwear this fall continues to
demonstrate the Santa Fe influ-
ence. Navajo-blanket jackets are
big sellers. Oversized suede coats
finished with fringe are important
this season as well. And, a simple
corduroy jacket is a subtle alter-
native to the dramatic Santa Fe
style.

Tops and bottoms for men and
women capture western charac-
teristics as well. This fall, a com-
plete wardrobe includes a cham-
bray shirt and a loosely cut pair
of denim jeans. Shirts in cust,
plum and olive will be wardrobe
standards as well.

The footwear choice is also
taken from the west. Cowboy
boots continue to be important.
This year, men and women are
becoming more daring in the color
of leathers they wear. Black and
brown remain the most popular
classics, but would-be cowboys are
beginning to build a wardrobe of
boots, and choosing colors such as
pumpkin, adobe red and rust.

Throughout this season's fash-
ions, earth tones are prevalent.
Hues including mustard, gold and
spice are used everywhere — from
neckties to handbags.
