CHAMPIONSHIP AUTO Racing
Teams, Inc. (CART) was co-
founded by Roger Penske and Pat
Patrich in [978 As race car
owners, both were looking to
produce a more visible and mar-
ketable product in the auto racing
business.

CART was founded on the
principles of increasing respon-
siveness to drivers, teams, news
media and fans. Rules would be

sthifized and visibility enhanced.

As CART enters its 12th season
in 1990, more competitors than
ever before are capable of winning
the championship. For the seventh
straight year, all races will be na-
tionally televised.

CART will be the only racing
series to have events televised on

all three major U.S. networks and
ESPN. Attendance last year fop-
ped 2 million for the second con-
secutive season.

The Indy Cars that compete in
the CART/PPG Indy Car World
Series are among the most
sophisticated in the werld. Utiliz-
ing the same technology and ma-
terials that go into the design and
construction of aircraft, Indy Cars
produce 750 horsepower and are

capable of reaching 370 km/h
(230 mph).

These open-wheel, single seat
machines are valued a! approxi-
mately $300,000 U.S. each. They
get 9.8 miles per gallon of
methanol and will use an average
of 300,000 gallons a season.

A top-level team can expect to
spend close to $4 million U.S. to
campaign a season. This includes
the purchase of cars and engines.
