Victoria ghost busters tell their tales From page 20 made for the occultee. According to Kevin Marron in Witches, Pagans & Magic in the New Age, not all of our fellow Canucks are puck-whipped or bingo-bound on Saturday night: some are dabbling in the original ‘old time religions’ of pagan fame. Marron has interviewed people from all walks of life for Wit- ches..., ranging from police of- ficers to teachers and doctors to civil servants, but all have one thing in common: adherence to some facet of the occult. He reports that covens of wit- ches are active in Montreal and Victoria (no two solitudes there, presumably) and that there are elves in Manitoba (peeved at others inquiring about their ap- parent lack of pointed ears, they insist that they can feel them there and that’s what counts}. In fact, there is a highly active if not overt subculture out there dabbling in Druidism, white and black magic and other pagan rituals that most of us don’t even suspect. Witches...(Seal/Cantemporary; 260 pp.; $24.95 in hardcover) ex- plores both the dark and light sides of occultism and might, were this reviewer given to stooping low, be described as spell-binding. And now step three: They’re Heeere. A Gathering of Ghosts (Haun- ting and Exorcisms from the per- sonal casebooks of Robin Ske!ton and Jean Kozocazi) is a serious book — or at least the authors are. I say this because some of the quotes that will be employed here might accidently lead you to think otherwise. The authors are, believe or rot, real Canadian ghost-busters. Skeiton is the author of some 70 books and the founder of the Cre- ative Writing Department at the University of Victoria. Kozocari is, according to her book-jacket bio., “an authority to whom people naturally turn when...troubled by events that appear to defy rational explanation.” This is the pair you call when you have a “...ghost that (has) vampire tendencies’ or hotel haunts that indulged in a bit of murderous mayhem decades ago. But Jean and her trusty sidekick, Robin, are the first to acknowledge that clients may be a bit reluctant to call in the first piace: ‘‘Most people are unwilling to ad- mit...that their home has a ghost or ghosts, in residence’’ (yeah, just imagine what that could do to property values). A Gathering of Ghosts (Prairie Books; 169 pp.; $22.95) is highly recommended if only for its ex- cellent entertainment value, but, if you believe in such things as ghosts, this could be the reference work that will solve some of your problems.
