Weight of flowers means dahlias need ito be staked

DAHLIAS, ESPECIALLY the
tall-growing types, need to be
staked.

This keeps them from flopping
over under the weight of their
numerous flowers. Although
tomato stakes will be quite ade-
quate, special hoop-shaped sup-
ports are also available which are
more esthetic and require less
work,

Simply slip them over the
sprouts early in the season and
they will grow right through the
hoop which will then support them
without requiring any tying.

Lilies like to have their heads in
the sun and their feet in the shade.
This is especially important im-
mediately after spring planting,
when the recently disturbed ground
can heat up considerably. A thick
mulch of organic matter — chop-
ped leaves, grass clippings, Gecora-
tive bark, etc. — will help keep the
soil coo! and moist without
shading the leaves.
