THE GHASTLY events of the weekend in China were in- evitable. It was foreordained that in the end, the Red Fascists would slaughter their own people in the most brutal domestic suppression of modern times. Power comes from the end of a gun, said Mao. Exactly. And it is by the gun that communists rule. ‘ The shock was so great that one almost feels sorry for the liberal West, which wanted so desperately to see, hear and speak no evil where the laughingly-named “People’s Republic’? was concern- ed. And of course none were more eager to hear no evil than the polit- ical and academic establishments in Canada. China was onr pet commie country. Mao Tse-tung himself wasn’t thought to be all that bad. Certainly not by Pierre Trudeau, who took the trouble to worship at cEé " Yes, one- man-one-vote in little old South Africa was the thing we all had to be worried about. Never mind about one- man-one bullet in Beijing or Mozambique. ’”’ ee his feet a couple of years after Mao took power. It was this coun- try, too, under Trudeau, that threw the old Nationalist Chinese Embassy of Taiwan out of Ottawa. Realpolitik demanded it. Perhaps. But we grovelied. We gave that silly old commie doctor, Norman Bethune, the status of a * saint. Mitchell Sharp, then the minister for.external affairs, made a shrine out of the Bethune house in Ontario, accompanied by the Chinese ambassador. More recently, a movie has been made with Bethune as hero. As I wrote at the time, no one would have dreamed of making a movie about some Canadian doctor — however heroic --- who had work- ed in the field for the Nazis. It just didn’t seem to occur to anyone that the Chinese Communists were just as bad as Hitler’s boys. But fascism is fascism, be it black or red. Meanwhile, Canadian academics were either busting their guts to get to China and teach, or assuring us that, actually, it was the West that was responsible for China’s ills. China was respectable, you see. Sure, it was commie, but since - when has communism been an obstacle to clever folk like Cana- dian academics? Rarely. In the same way, they flocked to Cuba. Police recover WEST VANCOUVER Police re- covered this week thousands of dollars worth of items believed to have been stolen from 15 recent auto break and entries. A police spokesman said the detaclimeni received a call Tuesday .from a man who said he saw another man riding his stolen 1986 Honda dirt bike. It made no difference that Tibet had been raped just as ruthlessly by the Chinese as Poland was by the Germans. Where’s Tibet? Such embarrassments were glossed over or ignored, even though the facts were available. And now the mas- sacres perpetrated in Tibet are be- ing perpetrated in China itself. And not for the first time. Meanwhile, the Joe Clarks kept protest to a murmur. They were too busy practising realpolitik and chumming up. The biggest villain in creation was not China, the U:S.S.R., or any other commie ol- igarchy, but South Africa. Yes, one-man-one-vote in little old South Africa was the thing we all had to be worsied about. Never mind about one-man-one bullet in Beijing or Mozambique. Similarly, our liberal elite puts out bushels of stuff against South Africa, nothing at all about China, except that which flatters. By the time you read this, the press will no doubt have viewed the happenings in Beijing with alarm. Which is cause for another laugh. For the media too have been all-forgiving where Red Fascism is concerned. Take the National Wimp, otherwise known as the Globe & Mail. in 1986, it even put out a 22-page specia! edition called “Report on China” — a bunch of puff pieces designed to garner advertising and persuade us — even if only cubiiminally, that China was a budding democracy. (‘Shenzhen is something of a marvel. It is one of the special economic zones with which the Chinese hope to attract foreign in- vestors...’".) In 1984, the Evening Wimp did a lot of contented burbling on the occasion of the 35th anniversary 01 the foundings of the People’s Republic. ‘‘China is opening more every year, economically and socially ... Our opportunities should not be missed, because the potential is very great.’’ Yes. Of course. Especially for protesting students. To see such hype in perspective, you have to imagine similar senti- ments being expressed over Hitler’ Germany.
