MAILBOX 7 - Friday, Maren 24, 1989 - North Shore News ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION Parents ‘voting with feet’ Dear Editor: Regardless of who is right or who is wrong in the ongoing fracas between Collingwood School and its neighbors, I think there is one point we can safely agree on, and that is the fact that the school owners must be reasonably sure that the demand for their services exists, otherwise they would not be so anxious to enlarge the school. The real hardship is being borne by the children who are aspiring students unable to attend a school which their parents perceive as offering a superior standard to that presently delivered by the state system. Defendants of government schooling will go to any length in attempts to persuade us of the value of their product, just so long as they do not actually have to face up to the competition. The flaws in their argu- ments show up in the number of people who are prepared to undertake alternative courses such as home schooling, and who are voting with their fect and walking away from government schools to private establishments. This in spite of the added burden of having to pay twice for their children’s schooling. If our legislators are not prepared to take a more enlightened approach to the educational needs of our children, confrontations such as that taking place over the Collingwood School extension will continue to occur, to the detriment of us all, but more particular- ly, to our children. If we want to keep North Van- couver at least partly green, we should be protesting to our city and district councils against this ir- responsible and ugly type of de- velopment. M. McLeod North Vancouver Recycling happening too slowly Dear Editor: I feel we are not only acting too slowly where implementing recycl- ing programs is concerned, but also being very short-sighted in waiting for markets to develop for such things as plastics.
