Help’s at hand HELP’S AT Hand, a weekly feature by the North Shorxe Infor- mation and Volunteer Centre, discusses and deals with questions on such topics as government policies and programs, benefits, legal rights, taxation and public services. Question: I turn 65 this spring bat I am going to continue work- ing until the end of the year. A friend told me that I wouldn’t have to pay unemploymert insarance after I'm 65. Is that true? Answer: Yes, it’s quite true but it is also true that you would not be able to collect regular or illness benefits. However, you may be el- igible for one lump-sum payment even if you are still working. You will qualify for this if you have been paying UI premiums and you worked at least 20 weeks in your 65th year. As soon as you turn 65 you should apply at the of- fices of Employment and Im- migration Canada (you will need a Record of Employment). Ask them for an Application for Benefit form. Remember this is 2 benefit you have earned but you will not get jt unless you apply. It does net come to you automatical- ly. Question: My late busband and I have rented the same small house ia North Vancouver for 25 years bot since my husbend’s death ‘ast year, | am: having 2 straggic to pay the rent. I hate the thought of giv- ing up my home sod moving into am sAonymoas apartment where I'm sare I wonld be lonely bat I don’t know what else to do. I am 1. Answer: You may qualify for the provincial government’s pro- gram SAFER (which stands for Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters) if your rent is more than 30 per cent of your income. Pick up a SAFER application form at any Social Services and Housing Office in B.C. or phone (toll-free) 682-0391 and ask to have a form sent to you. Have ready copies of income tax returns and cheque stubs from pension and in- come assistance for the previous month. If you qualify, SAFER will pay 75 per cent of the amount by which the rent exceeds 30 per cent of your income. Even though your rent may be higher, $330 per month is the maximum rent you can claim as a single person ($365 for a couple). Because of this restriction, you will prebably only be eligible for a subsidy of about $100 per month. However, even if you do not qualify for this assistance, don’t be despondent. There are other op- tions. What about putting your name on the waiting list at one of the ex- cellent senior housing facilities on the North Shore? Your rent burden would be reduced, and you don’t have to give up your in- dependence. Apartments are available, and you wouldn’t find them ‘‘anony- mous"’ either. There are thriving social programs going on al! the time which you are free to par- ticipate in as you like. The North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre office has a list of housing available for seniors. The North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre, a United Way agency, is located at 1060 Roosevelt Cres., North Vancouver, B.C.
