8 - Friday, August 12, 1988 —- North Shore News Merchants to celebrate Ambieside AMBLESIDE’S REVITALIZA- TION program may be far from complete, but that’s not stopping a group of local merchants from staging an ‘‘excavation celebra- tion,’’ in the midst of the con- struction site this Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ‘““We want to do something posi- tive to boost the area,’” says Chuck Willet of Shoppers Drug Mart, who, together with Glenn Matheson of Ambleside Hobbies, Don Fleming of West Van Fur- niture and Malcolm Kerr of McDonald’s Restaurant is organiz- ing a light-hearted event. Matheson said construction along Ambleside has caused ‘‘so much negativism"’ which prompted him to take advantage of the mess and make fun of it. “It's (Ambleside) going to be marvellous when the revitalization is completed. Some merchants don’t seem to understand that. It had to come, it's here, so why not make fun of it?”’ The Royal Hudson will slow down to a crawl as if passes through Ambleside Saturday. At the same time the train will be serenaded by a dixieland band at 14th Street and Marine Drive, with band members decked out in Royal Hudson T-shirts and engincers’ caps, A ‘No Sidewalk Sale’ is planned, with kids in hard hats offering lemonade in the middle of the road. There will be a 30-foot WV youth committee to be named A YOUTH advisory com- mittee for West Vancouver will be named in September to organize events of interest for youth and to advise West Vancouver District Council and its commis- sions. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer The move is one of several rec- ommendations made by the Youth Party Task Force, which under- took an extensive study after a number of neighborhood parties got out of control. The youth advisory committee will be made up of three adults appointed by council, one alder- man representing council and a number of student representatives from the secondary schools. The secondary students chosen will represent classmates on a one-to-250 ratio, and serve, along with other committee members, for one year. The work of the Youth Parties Task Force included establishment of a set of youth party guidelines and an inventory of recreational! activities available to youth in the district (with a view to increasing them). The task force recommended in- vestigating peer counselling pro- grams that have proved successful elsewhere, making brochures describing social service agencies and programs available, and con- sidering outreach rehabilitation programs for ‘‘at risk’’ teens. Putting youth workers with counselling skills in touch with “at risk’’ youths and consideration of extra police staff to build on the strengths that already exist be- tween local youths and police of- ficers were other actions recom- revitalization Ronald McDonald, jugglers, clowns and face painters, and the Shoppers Drugmart Life Bear is scheduled to put in an appearance. Sure to be collectors’ items are ballcons being made up for the event, inscribed with ‘‘What a lovely mess — Ambleside.” Matheson has also invited stores to decorate their windows for the occasion. “Ivll be the one and only time you'll be able to walk down the middle of Marine Drive,’’ says Cathy Kuzel of Ambleside Hob- bies, Matheson said he wanted to make sure the road in front of his store would not be paved in time for the event. ‘When I called district hall to ask the planner, he was astonished at the-nature of my question. The whole idea of this event is to have amess, ’’ he said. Paving has been completed on Marine Drive from 19th to 15th, with the remainder of the revitalization area still in gravel. Sidewalks should also be in place down to 15th by the weekend. A post-construction celebration parade is currently being planned for Ambleside for Sept. 11, when road work is expected to be com- pleted. Now you can impress your friends with an Australian wine...
