8 - Sunday, July 31, of extent of revital Dear Editor: In December, 1987, the mer- chants in the Ambleside area of West Vancouver agreed to the concept of revitalization. This revitalization was to enhance the profitability of the businesses while beautifying the area for all who live and shop in West Vancouver. As merchants, we knew only of the plans to landscape, provide new lighting, widen and resurface lanes, construct attractive side- 1984 - North Shore News rerchants ‘una walks, install benches, increase parking and open view corridors at 14th and 17th Streets. We knew nothing of the major road con- struction that is now taking place. Either myself or a senior member of my staff attended all of the meetings of the Ambleside Village Business Association that we were informed of, and never was there a mention of a total road closure al any of these meetings, Therefore, 1 feel your editorial, | No pain, no gain, which accuses the merchants of ‘‘whimpering’’ to be extremely uncalled for and would expect an apology from the editors of this newspaper who ob- viously did not know’ all of the facts. : Mayor Lanskail, counci! and the municipal administration were in- deed involved in the decisions on this project and to attempt to distance themselves at this point is ludicrous. : Get into the numbers game Dear Editor: Numerology, it’s time our ad- ministrators got into the numbers game, Drive over Capilano Bridge, delay with 400 cars in lineup, fif- tecn minutes delay and what have you? Two thousand man hours lost per day, 20,000 litres gas idle into toxic fumes in cight hours and a construction crew of 0.3 man over weekend. ' , Try Ambleside: 280 business people sitting on their hands losing a million dollars, eight construc- tion crew members working part time. While no one has the authority to change stop signs and lights for changed traffic patterns Park ‘big enough’ Dear Editor: Regarding Matsumoto Shipyards site. What timing! No sooner do we receive our increased tax notice than we read that the District of North Vancouver will study ac- quiring another park site instead of allowing some -taxable develop- ment to take place that would of- fer attractive housing in place of a present industrial site. Hopefully business will improve for Mr, Matsumoto or alternately another thriving industry will take his place — one that has noisy trucking or some similar distur- bance associated with it — some- _ thing for the coffer to fix old Panorama Drive with my tax money instead of buying more parkland. Cates is big enough now. Dale Anderson North Vancouver This week at councils NORTH VANCOUVER CITY COUNCIL and NORTH VAN. COUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL are now into their summer sched- ules. Saiurday ization As the merchants will all have a substantial tax increase due to the revitalization project and municipal road improvement deci- sion, J do not feel consideration and sensitivity to the concerns of the retail businesses are too much to ask. Especially when it means the loss of much needed jobs for employees. The inequities that are occurring now and the variations from the Original revitalization plan no longer make the revitalization a viable project for many of the merchants. In addition to this, the improper handling and implemen- tation of the project would cause any business person grave concern. Robert G. Harrington President West Van Florist Ltd.
