Thief jailed

A 21-YEAR-OLD North Van-
couver man was sentenced Friday
in North Vancouver provincial
court to 40 days in jail after he
pleaded guilty ta one count of
theft under $1,000.

Robert Hill Sinclair was origi-
nally charged in connection with a
dan. 7 incident in which a woman's
purse was snatched.

Crimestoppers starts
the year with a bang

TIPS CALLED in to Crimestop-
pers have solved a record average
of four cases per day last month —
almost a 500 per cent increase over
January, 1987. :

“In one month we solved one-
third as many cases as we did in all
of 1987,’' said Greater Vancouver
Crimestoppers unit coordinator
Sgt. Bill Harkema.

Because of the increased rate,
police departments in nearly every
municipality in the Lower
Mainland were able to close files
on unsolved cases.

‘Harkema credits the recent suc-
cess to strong media support. ‘‘The
Crimestoppers number also served
as a tips line for apprehending the
Oakalla New Years’s Day
escapees, with our information
leading to the arrest of three in-
dividuals,’’ he said.

“In January, Crimestoppers

“chalked up 46 arrests, $72,645 in
- retrieved stolen property,- $33,470
in drugs seizéd, and saw 121 crim-
inal cases cleared. During the same
month last year, 15 arrests were
made, $181,700 in stolen property

was retrieved (including a major
seizure of $130,000 in computer
equipment), $25,450 in drugs was
seized and 23 cases were cleared.

By comparison, 1987 saw year-
end totals of 201 arrests, $596,000
in stolen property retrieved,
$406,000 in drugs seized, and 346
criminal cases cleared,
