ACCIDENT RESEARCH HOTLINE OPEN urveyors study trucking industry MOTORISTS WHO have had bad — and good — experiences when sharing B.C. roads with commer- cial rigs can now make their views known to the trucking industry through a new UBC accident research hotline. Callers will be asked to par- ticipate in a telephone survey being carried out on behalf of the B.C. Trucking Association in coopera- tion with ICBC. The study will identify truck driving behavior that causes fellow road users most concern. Resear- chers also hope to find out whether Negative traffic experiences affect the public's attitude toward the trucking industry. The Trucking Association in Claims increase could drive up insurance costs B.C., and member organizations across Canada, will use the survey results in their driver development programs. “Accident records show that 80 per cent of professional drivers observe good safety procedures when behind the wheel,’’ says Fergus Savage, manager of ICBC’s Fleet Safety Program. ‘‘But the A 10 per cent increase in claims re- corded for the first six months of 1987 will probably result in higher Autoplan insurance premiums next year, ICBC president Tam Holmes warned recently. “The surge in claims and their costs means that B.C. motorists are going to pay more for their in- surance in 1988 unless we see a reversal,'’ Holmes said. The upward irend began in 1986, which recorded the most claims for any year during the 21 - Wednesday, August 26, 1987 - North Shore News remaining 20 per cent are cause for concern -- ultimately, that's who we want to reach." The 15-minute interviews will be conducted by UBC accident researchers through September. Identical information is being compiled through Washington State University and will be com- bined with the B.C. data. corporation's i4-year history. During the first six months of this year, ICBC received 282,000 claims, an increase of 25,000 over the same period in 1986. Injuries, the most expensive type of claim, are up by 17 per cent provincially with 16,000 claims reported. The average cost of claims is also up, by six per cent. Holmes noted that this figure is traditional- ly slightly higher than the cost of living index, which rose by 4.5 per cent for 12 months ending June 30. Additional questionnaires will be aimed at police, various industries and individual truck drivers. The final analysis is expected to be complete by spring 1988, Anyone involved in a positive or negative trucking incident while on the road this summer, and who wants to participate in a short in- terview, is urged to call 228-6197. The Greater Vancouver area, which accounts for almost half of all claims made in B.C., recorded 27 per cent more bodily injury claims, the biggest increase in the province for this category of claim. Increases are reported in all types of claims and in most areas of the province. Notable excep- tions are northern B.C. and Kootenay claim centres which re- corded a slight decline in the number of claims reported. Pe ed THE ONE STOP DIRECTORY oes FOR ALL YOUR Y AUTOMOTIVE NEEDS.
