A8 - Wednesday, June 6, 1984 - North Shore News T CAN GET A BIT COMPLICATED, get this straight by Doug Collins Forget it, ‘VU! this business of who will knock whom off the TV. But one thing comes through: it isn’t worth moving a single channel in order to fatten the pocketbooks of Daryl Duke and CKVU. Screw them. As you may have heard, the two North Vancouver councils are objecting to the CKVU plot, and let’s hope that by the time this tirade appears, West Vancouver counci! will have done the same thing. If it hasn't, it should be sentenced to watch CKVU for a whole week, which, God knows, would be worse than falling into the clutches of the Ayatollah. There is no limit to the greed displayed by those CKVU types. Greed is what makes the world go round, of course, but we may object when their avarice costs us. And it would cost us either the displacement of one of three American channels, in- cluding KCTS9, Seattle, or the partial disruption of same. Minions at CKVU are ordered to deny all that, of coure, but | would as soon believe that Art Kube is Santa Claus as I would believe any of that propaganda. The least worst that could happen would be that the CKVU predators force our local community television to shift its place on the dial with no other harm done. But why should they be permitted to barge around on the dial like a lot of drunks, knocking people over and _ obliging viewers to remember new numbers? When Duke & Co. applied for their licence, they crawled all over the floor in front of the CRTC, promising miracles and the virtual sav- ing of mankind if only they could get into the money. And that was from a small- range UHF channel. Then they got onto cable, and now, not having the audience they think they deserve, they want to give orders to the cable people. What they are after, is more viewers on Vancouver Island. But what has Van- couver Island done to deserve CKVU? People over there certainly aren't clamoring for the left-wing, radical chic, partor-pink, addle-pated rav- ings of Laurier LaPee, the well-known French commentator. Nor can they be gasping for more of CKVU's half- baked news programs, in which simpering girls and pimply-faced youths parade in confusing succession. And the rest of the stuff is what you can get on 20 other sta- tions: Charlie’s Angels, One Life to Live, and a pile of movies interrupted by more ads than decency permits. Which brings me to my peroration. The Criminal Code should be amended to make it an indictable offence to interfere in any way with KCTS9. The station is not perfect, but thousands of people in these parts — in- cluding me — actually pay to keep it on the air. Its Master- piece Theatre series alone is worth the money. Further- more, you don’t have to suf- fer through advertisements for Tampax and toilet paper. The station is worth a thou- sand CKVUs. If the CRTC grants this re- @ mailbox Diagonal parking can save lives Dear Editor: This 19-year-old girl’s death while riding a bicycle could have been prevented if we had diagonal parking rather than parallel parking on main thoroughfares. We see people struggling to park a full-size auto in a space barely long enough for it, while holding up a string of traffic in the process. With diagonal parking you can pull into a slot and back out again without all that jockeying, and watch oncoming traffic over your right shoulder. Also, your door, when open, isn't straddled over the oncoming traffic lane. J.H. Cooley West Vancouver quest, it should be made to sit in front of the CKVU screen right through the summer holidays. In the meantime, you can help to. avert catastrophe by complaining. There is just time to do it, the deadline for inverventioNS being June 8.
