B2 - Friday, June 8, 1984 - North Shore News CRICKET UPDATE LAST SATURDAY the North Shore Cricket Club first team played an exciting game against Langley at Langley, and defeated the home team to keep their win- ning streak intact. Langley batted first and _scored 124 for 9 in their allot- ; __’ ted 40 overs, K. Gardiner top-scoring with 34 runs. North Shore’s fielding was of a very high standard and gave the desired support to bowlers R. Herbert 4 for 24, P. Cantelo 2 for 20, and skip- per H. Griffiths 2 for 28. When North Shore started their innings they suffered an early setback and were strug- gling with their score at 34 for 3. Thanks, however, to a solid partnership between J. Mitchell (22) and A. Sharma (18) a recovery was made and, from there on, team ef- fort prevailed. B. Simms scored 18 runs, R. Herbert (16) and L. White (16). Then P. Cantelo 19 not out and J. Matthew saw NSCC to vic- tory with but one ball left to be bowled of their allotted 40 overs. It was truly an exciting finish. Final score: NSCC 125 for 9. On the same day the WSCC second team defeated Rich.. mond at Norgate Park im glorious sunshine. NSCC batted first and scored 114 runs. Simon Evans — last season’s Batsman of the Year for NSCC — m his first appearance for this season as a result of recent surgery and topscored with a very stylish 30. K. Hira punished al! bowlers alike for his 28, and S. Kaul (16), skipper B. Adie 13 not out and S. Aguiton (10) batted nicely to bolster their team’s total. The most successful bowlers for Richmond were skipper P. Dixon 2 for 9 and M. Gresham 4 for 37. When Richmond started their innings Kenny Brad- shaw gave immediate indica- tion of the-superb bowling ‘that was to come from him when he had opening batsman Reed caught behind beautifully by B. Adie for nought off his third ball. Richmond were in trouble and never really recovered despite the gallant effort of M. Gresham. He alone of- fered his team some hope, but with his personal score at 33 he fell victim to a fine catch taken by S. Aguiton off the bowling of J. Ede. .. Thereafter the end was in sight and S. Kaul (1 for 4) took a very nice return catch to confirm victory for the home team. Richmond were able to score only 87 runs. Kenny Bradshaw's 10 overs earned him 2 wickets for a mere 15 runs, J. Ede took 3 for 20, and K. Hira 3 for 33. NSCC fielded well as a team but D. Cooke, B. Im- age and J. Underhill were outstanding.
