PURSES AND BOOTS are also made up in contrasting patches of leather which create eye- catching lines and patterns for the high-fashion dresser. The assorted colors make accessory mixing and matching a natural. FROM PAGE CO there is still enough demand for the comfortable, flat leathers .or stubby-heeled pumps that were popular last year. But if the Italian win- dow displays are any indica- tion, this year’s answer to casual may be the boot. The Italians are coming out with many styles this season. While the tall, knee- length cut is still in demand, the casual dresser is looking for more comfort — something they can find in the ‘floppy’ boot. It’s back this season in a multitude of textures and colors — cot- tons, sucdes, even plastics for a touch of the bizarre — as one of fall’s more useful ac- cessories. Many of the styles shown in Rome were versatile for different looks, worn either high or pushed down around the ankle. Such playfulness has its own form in the more sophis- ticated pages of Italian show fashions as well. Take the suede evening sandal (in red or black) we found at Valentino’s. Its strap coils around the ankle, and then continues up the calf, ending with a coy snake’s head. At a second Valentino shop we found another in- triguing style — his suede and leather ‘‘tiger’’ look, with skin-patterned shoes and boots in black or rust (the half-cut -boots sold for 410,000 lire, about $300 Canadian at the time), and a similar all-leather style in a leopard pattern, complete with matching bomber jacket. Designers put equal impor- tance on other accessories, right down to the bright, striking colors of their make- up. There are belts; this ¢eason they can go as wide as possi- bic, in bold, startling shapes and colors (vibrant blues or purples are great for spicing creative Dance & Rhythm Jazz, Folk & Hula Dancing Pre-school Age to Adult Popular Organ & Plano School Age to Adult Call —— EVELYN MENDOZA — B.S.E. 987-6488 up black and white). Scarves provide a soft finish or dramatic splash of color. There are hats in soft felts, perfect for a sophisticated finish with suits or. big coats and great with. today’s shorter hair styles or long hair tucked behind the ears. Gloves, too, are a very big item in all fashion circles this fall, particularly with formal wear, where they are free to flow to the elbow. Such accessories are as im- portant to designers as the clothes they design and, for the fashion-conscious buyer, they can take dollars off wardrobe costs by making new looks out of the basics, a great flexibility for turning casual to formal, or vice ver- sa. They give women the best of both worlds. NEXT ISSUE: Italy's ‘‘casual’’ men. Marianne McKave is a freelance writer just returned from a trip in Italy. The Great ¥ the ‘Affection’ | caused.
