Have you ever wondered what happens if you are on a leisurely car trip through ' Canada or the USA and something awful happens at home? One of the pleasures of travelling by car is that you aren't locked-in to a schedule and can stop where you please, be it hotel, motel or campground. . I asked Constable Don Jette, in charge of Crime Prevention for the North Vancouver RCMP. _ “We Have a Tourist Alert program that works in conjunction with the USA. On request, the information is fed into our computer on a priority basis. “This information is given to all patrol officers in the area during the daily briefings. Then, on their regular rounds, they watch for the vehicle.” Everyone who has travelled in foreign countries (exception, USA) is usually appalled when their pass- ports are taken from them by A first FROM PAGE C1 km from Canton, Mandarin is the language used at ‘university.) She also finds out in advance that she will have to answer to “Buh-ch-tine” instead of Burstein because the Chinese language cannot accommodate all our western sibilants, par- ticularly ‘“‘r’’ sounds. “Heavens knows what Brian’s name will sound like,” she says. Burstein is also boning up on what else she can expect when she steps off the plane. “The food will be a delight, | All Inclusive 23-Day Tour Jay of Jay's Exotica Egyptian Handcratfts will be taking a small group on another of his highly successful trips to Egypt It you have ever dreamed of visiting the mystical land of the Nile. here Ils your opportunity to see it with one who knows and loves the country its language andi tts people * CAIRO e ALEXANDRIA * LUXOR ° ASWAN Leaving Sept. 22 Por details phone Jay. or drop by his shop for on itinerary 126 BE. 14th St, N. Burstein still doesn’t know what to pack in clothes, although one friend who taught in western China wound up wearing light blue “Mao jackets” and pants all year. Another unknown is what Brian will do for a year. The Institute appears to have plans for him, but the Bursteins don’t know what they are yet. In the meantime, Brian has bought a bicycle to get in shape for what will certainly be a trip into Canton every day from the Institute. What has the reaction been to her appointment from her colleagues at Capilano? Maybe they consider it an invasion of privacy. Who knows?” He added that it would be an impossible job to canvass every hotel, motel and campground in a general area for one missing person, unless (I guess) the person was suspected of a crime. The college ad- ministration has been particularly supportive, and even gave her a professional development grant, Burstein says. Her appointment is certainly a first for Capilano and possibly for B.C. community colleges. One of the things it does do is show the community the high calibre of in- structors at the North Vancouver college, most of whom hold PhDs or MAs in their discipline. “Yes,” muses Burstein, “one of the mistakes we made at the beginning I suppose was calling our- selves instructors instead of breaking down into professors, assistant professors and instructors.” But though the name is misleading to the com- munity, the quality of in- structors at the college is picnics, 922-9650 844 Park Royal North, West Van. Everything about the pair was phoney - names, ad- dresses, car licence -. and nobody at the hotel bothered to check-out any of it. “You know who pays for it?” asked Constable Jette. “We do. You and me. The hotels put the rates up to cover their losses and every time we travel we pay.” Back to the subject of missing persons, I asked Constable Jette the opposite question. “What do you do if you: FIND someone, perhaps an accident victim, who has no identification? How easy is it to secure iden- tification?” Not easy at all, it turns out. The first method is by fingerprints. Both Ottawa and Washington keep com- puter files but they are any- what counts in the final analysis. Thoughout the interview, Burstein’s almost tangible anticipation buoys the conversation. Fingerprints taken for other purposes such as bonding and armed services are kept with the agencies involved. “Are travellers to Canada more apt to be the target of criminals than the average citizen?” I asked. “Not at all.
