Formerly the fitness director at the New West Y., Joanne quit’ that post because she too Is expecting. Instead, she started evening classes at the Church for ladies ‘in the family way’. She had discovered a need for this type of program and also for young mothers who had just had their babies and were trying to get back into their pre-pregnant shape. That's the class run by Joanne Kates for pregnant women at Highlands United Church in Edgemont Village. Joanne’s husband, Dr. Michael Kates. a G.P.. says it has been his expenence that exercising mothers are more relaxed and better able to cope with the stresses of their childbeanng years. In his obstetrical patients he observes that women who exercise seem to be having easier deliveries and cer- tainly their period of recovery is faster. The classes are one hour in length and concentrate on posture and back strengtheners, leg and upper ‘tovol make our communities a better place to call home. Volunteers themselves are not looking for kudos. In fact, they probably feel they are the ones who = are benefitting most from their services. Many people become volunteers to satisfy a specific need in their lives, be uta career exploration, a constructive leisure activity. an introduction for re-entry to othe work force. oor whatever Of course those people whe receive the benefits of vofunteer activities and services appreciate the fact that there are people walking SECTION body exercises, tlexibility, exercises to sirengthen the pelvic floor as well as plenty of relaxation and sheer fun. Expecting her first baby in June, Joanne says there will be no interruption in the classes as a replacement instructor will take over until Joanne is ready to continue. And according to the fitness instructor, new mothers should be able to resume exercise classes six to eight weeks after delivery. All women who want to take the classes should see their doctor before starting any program.
