B4-Sanday News, October 5, 1980 Uninspired win for Caps Few sparks of action By LAIN SELLARS Capilanos’ first XV beat Vancouver Kats Rugby Club 17-9 last Saturday, but it was not a win for rugby fans. The greater part of the match was a kicking contest, highlighted with non- productive running on both sides. The Caps would appear to have problems utilizing their backs. The ball is not coming out quickly enough resulting in negative cross field running combined with maccurate kicking. They are placing too much of the heavier offensive load on their forwards. As it was, all three tnes for the locals were to come from the forward pack. Lock forward Bob Michael equalled an early try by Kats’ Al Woods and with a penalty kick by Jim Heaney the Caps led at the half 7-6. The second half held the match’s few minutes of decent rugby. Taking the ball against the head, the Caps had wing forward Tony Scott touching down for 4 points. In the last stages of the game fullback Bill Hen- derson made an excellent sideline kick under heavy pressure. The Kats fielded well, but through a com- munication breakdown threw the ball up for grabs. Kirk picked up and passed off to prop forward Gordon Curry, who with some hard running passed off to Scott, who scored in the corner. Michael made the convert and the Capilanos clinched the victory. If the locals are to con- tinue in their winning ways, they will have to bank on more than a few minutes of good rugby per game to do it.
