Playhouse (087-4444) CHAPTER TWO (comedy) Deibrook a § aa /s Queens Upper Levels 986-7922 Parade starts Saturday morning This year, Pacific National Exhibition has tapestried the program of’ events for its 66th annual Fair, with old friends and new — and more than a few surprises. “Fun-for-All” has been chosen as the theme for the 17-day carnival of en- tertainment, competition, colorful exhibits, dynamic action and, in addition, quite a slice of wit and wisdom. Scheduled to run from August 16 through Sep- tember 1, the PNE Big Show has planned crowd-pleasers to suit all tastes and ages. In the Coliseum, Showcase 80 will be offering headliners such as Canada's Rock and Roll Phenomenon, Prism, August 16; Charlie Daniels Band, August 17; for Sci-Fi fans, Gene Rod- denberry’s “the Star Trek Experience”, August 21, 22 and 23; Johnny Cash, August 24; John Denver, August 30; and the King of Canadian Rock, Burton Cummings, September 1. All shows start at 8:00 p.m., except Star Trek which will be presented twice each day at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets for attractions are available at all Vancouver Ticket Centre ouuets and at the Coliseum Box Office. Another high flyer will be the first Federal Govern- ment Pavilion featuring its own special luminary, a mock-up of the Canadian Armed Forces new fighter plane the CF-18A. Two custom designed red and white striped tent-lke structures will house 25,000 square feet of displays from 15 government departments and agencies. Highlights of the display will also be mock-ups of the DASH-7 and the Challenger, plus a multi-cultural stage show. This summer, in addition to the glamour of the annual Miss PNE Pageant August 19, there will be a Golden Agers Special August 20, dancing to the big band sound of Mart Kenney and Norma Locke. The Fair will host its second annual British Columbia Esso Talent Festival August 27 and August 28, drawing on gifted performers through- out the province. The finals will be broadcast live throughout British Columbia on CBC television. And, as always, the air will be laced with the excitement, the buzz, the special taste and pace of Western Canada’s largest annual exhibition. For action enthusiasts, the scoreboard lists the tense, international competition at the daily logging shows; the roaring destruction of the world’s largest Demolition Derby and exciting new rides on the Midway. The Prize Home is more attractive than ever featuring the finest B.C. craftsmanship. Prize programs remain at $2 each for five chances to win the home, plus a chance every day to win a new GM car valued at up to $10,000 or a home appliance. At the Funfest Features Bowl, spectators will be gasping at the feats of the Ski Labatt Acrobatts; the Sky Cycle Trio and _ the Swaying Bilros; and = ap- plauding the magnetic appeal of internationally- known hypnotist, Romane. Top local names will be performing daily at outdoor stages while strolling the grounds will be clowns, an organ grinder and huge furry animals. As always at the largest agricultural fair in this part of the country, bidding for attention will be the ex- citement of the International Horse Show and the appeal of the annual Provincial 4-H Show for young farmers throughout British Colum- bia. Featured breeds are Guernsey during Dairy Week, August 16 to 30, Aberdeen Angus during Beef Week, August 21 to 25 and Nubian during the Trans-Canada Dairy Goat Show, August 27 to Sep- tember 1. A highlight of the BS -Sunday News, August 10, 1980 _ Horse Show, which runs daily throughout the Fair except August 18, 24 and 25, is the Heavy Horse Show marking the fiftieth an- niversary of the Heavy Horse Breeders Association. And, again, there is the breathtaking beauty of the Horticultural displays to say nothing of the mouth- watering sights of the Country Fair! For hobby enthusiasts there is a_ wealth of fascination at Creative Crafts exhibits. Visitors can become acquainted with the latest technological gadgets at Modern Living, Kitchen Karnival, Marketplace, and Home Showcase. At the Food Pavilion they can sample fare from around the world. And, oh _ yes, Creative Living displays are also planning a few surprises. How about stained glass, snakes and coin collections? This winning trio doesn’t travel together but they are a part of one of the most in- teresting presentations in years. The snakes? They're very alive, very valuable, very expensive, very varied and the pride and joy of the Her- petological Society which 1s arranging for their ap- pearance. Of course, there are all the other displays and exhibits to be found at the PNE — Dog World, the Armed Forces Display, the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame, that wonderful Challenger Relief Map, as well as the excitement of the E gears up for big show races at Exhibition Park and home games for the Van- couver Whitecaps at Empire Stadium August 23, and the B.C. Lions, August 26. Admission to the Fair is $2 for adults; 75‘ for children, aged 6 to 12 and free for children under 6.
