Dear Editor: As one of the concerned dozens who attended the March 31 meeting = at Gleneagles golf cours: regard- ing putting a recreation centre in the middle of the course, we wish to say that Trevor Lautens gor it wrong in his recent column. The upsettees are the golfers (and not all grumpy old men by any means). They are in danger of los- ing part of the golf course and can see that this will iead to further erosion of the course when more room is needed for parking, more facilities and protection to patrons of the rec centre from flying golf balls. Any recreational group would be upset — what if thev decided to do away with the playing fields at Ambleside or the tennis courts at the pre- sent-rec centre to make zoom for more buildings? There are other places to put a ree centre but no other place to put a golf course. The combination of the two facilities is not a good idea. The parks department could not come up with any location where this was done. The members of the golf club have come up with an alternative plan to place the recreation centre on the for- mer BC Rail right-of-way. north shore news MAIL Box Golf pros and rec centre cons This property was bought by the municipality tor this purpose at a cost of $3 mil- lion. This plan would save tax- Payers a good deal cf money and keep the facilities sepa- rate. We hope the parks depart- ment and West Vancouver council will agree with this proposal as a solution to the problem. Grace Carrell West Vancouver Dear Editor: In his April 17 open letter to West Vancouver City coun- cil, News columnist Trevor Lautens gave many good rea- sons for rejecting the pro- posed western community centre. As he says, the proposed project will be very poor value for $8.6 million. and the idea of putting a community centre that will cater mainty to chil- dren and non- golfing adults in the middie of a golf course is ridiculous and dangerous. Furthermore, the pro- posed banqueting suite seat- ing 250 and the patio/cafe/bar concession are completely out of line with the aims and needs of a com- munity centre that is being built with public money. However, political reality will probably not allow the council tc heed Mr Laucens* GIVERNY F LOWERS Show her vou have inherited her good taste. 2404 Marine Drive, West Vancouver 926-8272 Sunday 10 to 6 NORTH VANCOUVER Sale $4% g reg. $9.50 RECREATION COMMISSION ‘Mother’s Day is this Sunday Don’t panic... The centre has been promised and the present Eagle Harbour facility will close. It would be a brave council indeed that would deny the western community a replace- menr, but common. sense must prevail in the choice of facilities to be built. For a fraction of the cost of the proposed, — grandiose “Gleneagles Club,” a suitable facility, as modest as the centre it_ would replace, could be built on the site to the east of Marine Drive which was pur- chased for that purpose. No road relocation, no hacking at the golf course (except on the fairways of course), no children hit by stray golf balls, no banqueting suite and no concession. Stop the scaremongenng over the adjacent sub-station, look at the sciennfic evidence that shows there is no. risk from an installation: of the tpe at Gleneagles. Forget the idea that one day Gleneagles wilt need a pooi or an ice rink, These are just pipe dreams that are steer- ing this project towards stu- pidity. Instead, built a community centre that is functional and which the available land can accommadate. Spend the money saved, which will be millions of dol- lars, on upgrading the facilities at 22nd and Marine. Hopefully, this council will be remembered for using common sense in this matter rather than putting all its eggs in one overpriced and overblown basket.
