The criminal justice system is ‘‘often ineffective or impotent’’ in the eyes of many Canadians, according to a study prepared for Solicitor-General Pierre Blais. The study shows Canadians think society is increasingly dangerous, listing young offenders and teen gangs as the most com- . mon fear. Respondents said they’d like to see the reinstatement of the death penalty, stricter sentences for violent and repeat offenders, and tougher prison condi- tions — including compulsory work.
