The awards recognize cit- izens who have made contri- butions to cheir communities in the areas of emergency preparedness and response. Certificates were presented “Together they’ve recruited new instructors and contributed fresh ideas to help us enhance our program” Monday in Vancouver at an awards luncheon as part of the West Coast Disaster Response Conference. Janice Murray was recog- nized for her achievements in developing the emergency plan for Highland clemen- tary school and producing ABC of Earthquake Emergency Preparedness, a guidebook for North Shore schools. Also recognized were Patricia. Lambert — and Bernadette Woit, workshop facilitators for the District 44 North Vancouver School Board, for their efforts to increase schoo} participation in neighbourhood — emer- gency preparedness pro- grams. Woit was also recognized, along with North Shore Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program volun- teers Eileen Beadle, John Glavin, Lynne Pauwels, Bob Plummer and Ken Wheeler, NEWS photo Terry Peters JANICE Murray received an award for her efforts in developing an emergency pian for Highlands Elementary. Her daughter attends the North Van school. for her work within the com- munity in producing and delivering hands-on training in emergency preparedness. The acighbourhood pro- gram is administered through the North and West Vancouver Emergency Program, which is funded jointly by the three North Shore municipalities and employs 425 volunteers. The six award. recipients were the program’s first instructors. “Together, they've recruited new instructors and contributed fresh ideas to help us enhance our pro- gram. They've really done a lot of work and they're amaz- ing people,” said program manager Laurie Bean. Fourteen Lower Mainland municipalities participated in the Neighbourhood Spirit Awards program, which ree- ognized a total of 44 individ- uals.
