Tonia Timperiey, 15,

sion, marking the first-ever
title by a Canadian competi-
tor.

The West Vancouver stu-
dent was ranked number one
going into the competition,
but faced numbers two, three
and four en route to the 2nd
degree black belt world title.

SUCCESS in a World Cup moun-
tain bike race comes from getting
ahead and staying there. Passing is
about as likely as setting the cruise
control to crass the Second
Narrows Bridge.

North Vancouver's Leste Tomlinson,
however, did some major passing last
weekend as the North Vancouver rider
passed the most important opponent of
her mountain-biking career — the
Canadian Olympic Team selection test.

Tomlinson realized her dream last
Saturday in Quebec as she crossed the
finisk line ef a World Cup race in sixth
place — giving her the second of two
positions on the Canadian women’s team

bound for Atlanta, Strike that

women’s team bound for
Atlanta,

The other half of the
women’s team is North Van's
Alison Syder, two-time
world champion and the
dominant force on the World
Cup circuit this season.

“What P'm really happy
about is that | feel ['m get-
ling set and focused on
Atlanta,” Tomlinson said this
week on a rare day back at
her North Vancouver home.

In addition to making the’ mountain-
biking team headed for Atlanta,
Tomlinson is the first alternate for
Canada’s road racing team. Prior to
embarking on a mountain bike career,
Tomlinson was a world-class road racer
(as was Sydor).

In fact, both women will be compet-
ing in the Giro d°Italian road race next
week —- a 12-day tour in the Italian coun-
