B Teachers blast move # to cut special! ed cash NORTH AND West Vancouver teachers joined the chorus crit- icizing amalgamation plans which will cut local grants to special education by $402,000. By lan Noble News Reporter The reduction was announced by Victoria Jate last month in con- nection with a.province-wide amal- gamation proposal that may see the North and West Vancouver boards joining to create a North Shore board. Chuck Dixon, president of the North Vancouver Teucirers’ Association, said ihe public school system cannot bear cts to special education. “Public schools have successful- LIQUIDATION FOR BANKS,.RECEIVERS, INSURANCE CO} ly integrated students with special needs,” he said, “This success has been due to the collaboration of teachers and teaching assistants and support from district staff. “Elimination or reduction of any of these contributors will put the mast vulnerable students at risk.” West Vancouver Teachers’ Association president Kit Krieger agreed. “We were told that amalgama- tion would not be carried out on the backs of students and teachers,” he said. “However, the ministry's fig- ures indicate that two dollars will be cut from educational programs for every dollar cut from adminis- tration.” Figures released hy the govern- ment showed an amalgamated North Shore school district. would save $273,591 in school and dis- trict-based administration. At a North Vancouver school board meeting Nov. 28, trustees also denounced cuts to special edu- cation. But Education Minister Art Charbonneau said concerns the proposed amalgamation of school districts would significantly reduce support for special education and aboriginal students “fail to under- stand the intent of restructuring.” “The financial models for amal- gamation proposals sent out to dis- tricts indicated areas where there might be the potential for cost sav- ings and service integration,” Charbonneau said. “The model and funding scenar- ios should not be taken as final.” All districts now receive $770,000 for fixed administrative and program costs, he said. Of that, $350,000 goes to special education programs. See Services page 12 APANIES Santa Doesn’t Pay Retail. . . Why Should You? } THE DEAL OF [ THE DECADE!
