Fall accessories flash back to gracile schoo! ACCESSORIES DESIGNERS rose to the head of the class for fall, choosing pieces that work well with schoolgirl and menswear-inspired looks for day and disco-queen glamor for evening. By Layne Christensen Fashion Reporter Pick up one or all of the follow- ing 10 must-have items for fall and get set to hit the bocks (or the dancefloor).1) Over-the-knee socks or thigh-highs: If flashbacks to grade school give you the shud- ders, then this trend is not for you. Great legs and lots of patience are required to pull off this season's hottest look. Black opaque thigh-highs look best when worn to accessorize a schoolgirl jurnper and crisp white men’s-style shirt or short black slip dress and white tee. Cabled wool or subtly patterned over-the-knee socks work well with short tweedy suits, shearlings and woolly sweaters. 2) The backpack: Whether its done up in black velvet. tartan, inelton cloth, feather, or animal print. the knapsack is the carryall of choice for fall. it even shows up for evening in silver lame at Neto. 3) Sterling silver: Metal jewelry sets the standard for fall. Industrial hardware looks carry over from spring, with T.D. bracelets, dog tags, chain link necklaces, and nuckle-busting rings heading the list. For a richer look, silver is orna- mented by colcred beads and stones like topaz, hematite and amethyst. 4) Anything tartan: Accessories designers have gone mad over plaid. Schoolgirl tartan shows up on everything from headbands and baseball caps to wallets and bavk- packs. Even Ralph Lauren clad his models in plaid, patring tartan hosiery with shart, kicky skirts and fuzzy Nordic sweaters. 5) “Manchester” ‘booties: The Beatles had the right idea. Short, polished-leather boots go especially well with manstyle suits. 6) The Wonderbra: Fashion indus- iry insiders are dubbing it “The Wonder Year.” The hype surround- ing the Bra Wars between Gossard and Wonderbra, and the furor over Karl Lagerfeld’s Wundercorset at the Paris couture are boosting sales of cleavage-enhancing bras. 7) Rhinestones: For evening. you just can’t beat the glamor of rhine- stones, especially when worn with silver lame, 8) Over-the-knee boots: Yves Saint Laurent showed them in eroc- adile with a fitted jacket and micro- mini; Ralph Lauren showed them in leather with black britches, leather doublet and white ruff. We don’t recommend them unless (once again) you have great legs and lots of patience. 9) The sport watch: It takes a lick. ing and keeps on ticking. The Timex stainless-steel classic returns for fall. Also popular are plastic madels from Armiteoa, and the silver and gold chronograph from Guess. 10) The hat: Leather and plaid tans acces- sorize the school- girl look: berets add a beatnick flair; bowlers and fedoras accent man-style suits. Eleanor Mack's black felt bowler woven with satin and velvet ribbons is a winner.
