COLD WEATHER coats sweep
the city. They’re in long,
sweeping styles that compie-
ment pants and the new skirt
lengths, reaching from below
calf to the ankle.

Though shorter styles are still found
on coat racks, long coats win the
battle for style supremacy, overtak-
ing anything that reaches north of
the knee.

And since winter promises cold-
er temperatures than we've seen in
previous years, you'll get your

They may ail be a similar length,
but this season’s coats are shown in
an overwhelming number of shapes,
all with different names and
inspired by various themes.

There are topcoats, carcoats, bal-
maacans and princess coats, redin-
gotes, rebe coats, monk coats and
trenches, chesterfields, capecoats,
Slavic styles and swing coats, maxi
coats, military coats, wrap c-xiis and

invent coat names to suit the sea-

son's trends.

ditional styles, however, with
details that spell each particular

lingo that will help you to know
what coat you're buying, and to
choose one with style this winter.

Outerwear dictionary
For winter ’93 - °94, look for:

® Topcoat: This winter the tradi-
tional topcoat has erased shoulders,
is single breasted, simply cut with
slanted pockets and belted waist.

.@ Car coat: Often called a top
coat, the city-smart car coat is slim

@ Robe coat: One of the most
modern looks influenced by

menswear, it looks similar to a.

house coat or robe with a shawl col-
lar and sash closure.

@ Swing coat: This coat has an A-
line shape with a draped wide hem-
line that extends from the shoulder-
line.

Holmes, the cape coat has a loosely
fitted shape that reaches to the
ankle. :

It looks like a traditional cape,
but has siceves and sometimes a
capelet around the shoulders.

@ Redingote: This is a traditional

English riding coat worn by men in
the 18th century.

It is narrow and fitted to the low
waist, then flares out to the ankle. It
has narrow sleeves, a turned-down
collar and single buttons only to the
hip.
® Fit and flare coat: This is any
style inspired by the redingote, with
or without a collar, single or double
breasted, which nips and fits to low
waist, and then sweeps out wide to
the hem.

It may be buttoned from collar
to hem.

Maxi coat: The ‘70s inspired,
double breasted maxi coat is resur-
facing, in a narrow shape that
widens near the hem. It is belted
