Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW HEOSTATICS’ WHALE Music dives &® deep; Nirvana follow Nevermind with blasts from the past; new Canadian talents survive the hard winter at Moose Locige. Rheastatics — Whale Music, intrepid Records 1992 Like Crash Test Dummies and the Tragically Hip, this Taranto band is one of the many Canadian groups coming up fast and unafraid to forge a distinct sound. The particular strength common to all three bands is an ability to pull big lessons from precise little sketches drawn from the lives of a generation caught in the gap be- tween the boomers and the babies. There ‘is an orchestral scope here in terms of arrangement al- though Rheostatics lay their basic groundwork simply enough with guitars. Whale Music is joyously playful as is the case with the sing-along romping Legal Age Life At Variety Store (featuring the Pyramid of Stupidity Singers). ; Whale Music is also blunt rhetoric — just follow the ‘‘reci- | pe” spelled out in Guns: ‘’1. Some goof produces said weapon from a factory. 2. Some goof owns a store that peddles death. 3. Some goof buys the power toy. 4. Said last goof gets a novel idea. 5. Someone, not necessarily a goof, dies.” : , But mostly Whale Music is a rofound, poetic and challenging isten full of unexpected turns and tangents. Nirvana — incesticide, Geffen 1992 . Chug chug, smash smash, mumble mumble — calculated aural disorderliness. The nascent Nirvana prove themselves just a fuzz-grungy feedback squeal short of the very thick mayhem unleashed on Nevermind. But where Nevermind revealed "a consistent sound package, In- cesticide is arguably a more inter- esting release in many ways: you can hear the work in progress as - the band plays about in the sonic toy shop, trying out various musical perspectives and attitudes. There is a lot to like here. Alter- native radio is stuck on Sliver, a song recorded in 1988. Is he say- ing, “Grandma take me home” or “Gravitate me home’ or is he slurring something Japanese? Such are the esoteric pleasures to be derived when Nirvanaland bound. : Molly’s Lips and Son Of A Gun, Vaselines covers, display Nirvana’s punk colors, Hairspray Queen seems tu pay homage to ear!y XTC noodlings. Aero Zeppelin offers a pastiche of rumbling 1970s rock. Moose Lodge, Vertigo/PolyGram 1992 . Moose Lodge follows hard on the heels of 1991's Moose The Compilation. . Both are compilations af young Canadian acts. Most are from On- tario and points east. inclusion on the compilation represents a surfacing from the fr- inge. The marketing approach, taking the Moose Records roster TORONTO'S RHEOSTATICS forging a distinctive sound. and covering the country by way of the distribution power of a label like PolyGram, is smart and effi- cient. Moose The Compilation includ- ed Rheostatics, Grievous Angels, Polka Dogs and Lost & Profound. Moose Lodge introduces us to U.LC., Joey Ramone’s favorite Canadian band; Celtic Blue and Big Smoke, two bands from Guelph Ontario and the country- swingin’ Allen Baekeland, among many others. Lost & Profound, Lazy Grace, Grievous Angels and The Bookmen return with additional fine cuts. Moose Lodge represents a wel- come confirmation of the strength of our home-grown music scene. . , { . ys OF (TI HOURS: ’ SSonday to Thursday: 3:30 pm ta 1:60 am riday: 3:30 pen #0 2:00 am Saturday: Noon to 2:00 am, Sunday; Noon ta 1:00 9m For moee information, call 251-7744 Be a: !
