MAILBOX = New school lunch = program a positive | step by government Dear Editor: In a Feb. 2 letter, L. Ingram shared some of Collins’ views about the new free lunch program and that “nothing is free.” Well, as expected, this is a juicy issue for the Collinses of the world to sink their chompers into. As if they would ever endorse such a program. This letter is, in my opinion, ri- diculous. it is my understanding that the free lunch does not involve every school and that West Vancouver, ..understandably, is exempt from . ‘such a program. Universality in something like this is simply un- = warranted and would be- foolish: - for any government to take on. I believe the program will be extended to those schools and areas where the standard of living and income is: lowest and where unemployment is highest. Some of these areas will be re- questing a small contribution from these children towards the lun- ches. It is impossible to investigate every family and every school ; | It’s time to m preserve W. » Dear Editor: . For some time I have been con- “cerned about the degradation of creeks in West Vancouver. ~ One has only to walk up 18th Street from Marine Drive to see the compiete removal of trees and _ vegetation from the banks of the once beautiful Lawson Creek. ~ Another example of disdain for “the preservation of creek banks and streams is the area of Chip- pendale Road above the Upper Levels Higtway. Here, Lawson * Creek has been reduced to a man- -“ieured ditch surrounded in rubble. -~, The watercourses on the North Shore with their fern-covered ravines and fish life, could be a child to find out why they may not have a sufficient lunch. The cost of such ‘‘means testing’’ would far surpass the cost of the lunch program. All children, be they native In- dian, from Quebec, of ethnic orig- ins or white, would qualify for the same free lunch where these pro- grams are implemented. The school lunch program here is in reality an extension of the programs in many U.S. states where, during the early years of the Reagan administration, they tried to quash the program because of alleged waste of some lunches as observed in one waste receptacle outside of one school: --- These tunch programs in the U.S. are not universal and are in areas where the poverty income levels are ten-fold worse than anything imaginable up here. A full stomach is an investment and healthy bodies translate into healthy minds. T.E. Peck Vancouver restore and Van creeks community asset. If aif develop- ment was kept well away from the creek banks there could be trails, nature walks and natural West Coast beauty right here in our own backyard. If stream bank cover is preserv- ed and bridges used instead of culverts many of the streams that had fish in the past could have fish runs restored, There has been much written of the fisheries value of these small streams, Let's set about preserving and restoring our streams here in West Vancouver. Scanette Helmer West Vancouver -— ICBC propaganda repugnant . Dear Editor: . 1 find the inclusion of Ken .Hardie’s column in your paper repugnant. ; It gives ICBC’s director of public relations a free format to smoothly and glibly explain ICBC's excesses and justify its ex- istence. The. truth is, ICBC poses a complete conflict of interest. On one hand it provides insurance coverage, and on the other it determines and imposes settle- “ments. ’* Part of the high cost of auto insurance is created because ICBC is a monopoly to be taken advan- . tage of by everyone. Next time you take your car for repairs tell the body shop you are .paying yourself and see how much the cost comes down. As for Ken Hardie, the North — Shore News must know it is being used as a propaganda outlet for ICBC. You should hire an in- - dependent authority with no vested interest to comment on ICBC. J.L.
